Conversation gives this nursery its character. Communication Counts shapes the early years approach at Wrens Nest Primary School, helping children understand adults and make themselves understood by other children. The early years team has also gained Elkan’s Communication Friendly Setting accreditation. For a child still building the words to join in, that focus has a clear purpose.
Time for Twos sits alongside Nursery and Pre-School within the school’s early years provision on Marigold Crescent in Dudley. Children can start part time from age two; the early years provision includes two-, three- and four-year-olds, including children with complex special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Ofsted’s report dated 19 May 2026 judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than giving the nursery a separate rating.
Morning or afternoon attendance gives nursery children a session-based day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for this early learning: here, communication and emotional and social development receive deliberate attention. Adults have training in developing vocabulary, and conversations help children practise using words with another person. Learning to express a need and learning to play alongside someone belong together.
Communication Counts provides a named approach alongside Development Matters. The nursery curriculum page also links seasonal knowledge organisers and phonics materials, giving families a connection to the learning themes. Across early years, adults check children’s understanding regularly and give additional help when needed.
The Nursery and Pre-School number lesson catalogue makes the mathematical content concrete. A rectangle hunt, comparisons of long and short, and Five Little Ducks sit alongside exploring numbers and matching sets. These resources connect early number work with shapes, songs and comparisons, rather than leaving mathematics as a list of numerals. For home story time, the school’s Year of Reading recordings include Cave Baby and Oi Frog. Families can share the staff recordings at home as well as children enjoying them at school.
Settling rests on relationships and predictable routines. In May 2026, the early years findings described children becoming comfortable quickly, with adults providing attentive care and clear expectations for behaviour. The youngest played contentedly beside one another; cooperation and sharing developed as children grew older. That gives parents a useful picture of how social expectations develop with age.
Children with complex SEND are included within the early years provision. Sunshine is listed as an early years group, while Little Stars spans EYFS and Key Stage 1. These are distinct parts of the school’s support structure, rather than a promise that every nursery child uses them. A SENDCO and supporting SENDCO form part of the wider team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal application route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing a nursery session and applying for a school place as separate decisions.
Nursery children attend part time in either an afternoon or morning session. This is the practical attendance pattern to consider when fitting nursery around family routines.
