Nursery at Broadbent Fold Primary School and Nursery

Songs, story-led topics and daily outdoor learning give Broadbent Fold’s nursery its shape. This is a 26-place nursery class within Broadbent Fold Primary School and Nursery in Dukinfield, with a nursery teacher and a teaching assistant. Children begin their education within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), rather than in a separate childcare setting.
The choice of a morning place or longer provision matters for family routines. Morning attendance follows a five-day pattern; eligible families can access 30 funded hours, while paid afternoon wraparound is an option for those who do not qualify.
Books provide the starting point for topics that change each half term. Children contribute questions and interests to help shape where a theme goes. Adult-led activities sit alongside activities children initiate themselves, so the day combines guidance with opportunities to make choices and solve problems.
The EYFS curriculum brings together seven areas of learning. Broadbent Fold uses Development Matters and the Early Learning Goals to guide planning and assessment. In practical terms, staff observe children over time and use what they learn to decide the next teaching steps, rather than treating each activity as an isolated task.
Outdoor learning is a daily part of the programme. The outdoor space extends classroom learning, giving children opportunities to investigate their natural surroundings, apply new skills and move more. Indoors, classroom reading areas provide access to books. Early handwriting work starts in nursery with how children hold a pencil and form letters.
At the March 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that nursery children developed early language through singing and rhymes, preparing them for later phonics learning. This gives a clear purpose to familiar songs: participation builds the language foundations children will use as they begin learning to read.
Seesaw is the nursery’s main channel for sharing photographs and information with families. It gives parents a way to follow classroom experiences and continue conversations about them at home.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities sits within the school’s SEND arrangements. These include identifying barriers early, involving parents in planning and working with external agencies where appropriate. Physical access. The school has limited wheelchair access and three accessible toilets. Families with mobility needs should take that limitation into account when considering the setting.
Food is covered by the school’s meal arrangements. Families interested in school meals can contact the office. Broadbent Fold’s whole-school Food4Life Gold certificate dates from 20 March 2023; the scheme includes menu analysis against School Food Standards. This provides context for the school’s approach to food, rather than a promise about a particular nursery menu.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Broadbent Fold. Families must make a separate application through Tameside Council’s coordinated admissions process and meet the normal application deadline. Applications open from 1 November each year. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate tasks.
Preparation for the next stage has its own resources. The New to EYFS page provides a Reception transition booklet, recorded staff story times and transition support for parents. These can help children become familiar with the next step; they do not replace the admissions process.
Morning sessions run Monday to Friday, 9am to noon, providing 15 hours across the week. Eligible families can take 30 funded hours. Paid afternoon wraparound is offered to families who do not qualify for that funded option; contact the school for current charges.
To enquire about a nursery place, telephone 0161 303 9411 or email admin@broadbentfold.tameside.sch.uk with your child’s full name, birth date and home address. The school is on Tennyson Avenue, Dukinfield, SK16 5DP. An EYFS virtual tour offers another way to explore the provision before making an enquiry.
