Nursery at Yew Tree Primary School

Apple Nursery combines a choice of 15 or 30 hours with a simple daily food routine: fruit, bagel and free milk, with a packed lunch for children attending for 30 hours. It is Yew Tree Primary School’s own nursery in Dukinfield, on Yew Tree Lane.
Children can start in the term following their third birthday, subject to space, and there is an additional January intake. Apple has a nursery teacher who also leads the school’s early years team, alongside a teaching assistant. That places the nursery within the school’s early years team.
Repetition gives the early learning here its shape. At the January 2023 inspection, nursery resources were maintained well, children understood their use, and adults planned early years learning with opportunities to return to familiar knowledge. For a young child, revisiting learning gives another chance to practise rather than moving straight to something new.
The early years curriculum provides foundations for subsequent learning. The useful emphasis for parents is on building knowledge through repeated encounters with it. In January 2023, children in early years also followed adults’ instructions promptly, supporting the routines around learning.
Beyond the classroom, the wider school has playground adventure trails, play equipment and a large field. These are features of the school grounds, rather than a description of Apple’s session timetable.
Food arrangements are straightforward. Children attending for 30 hours bring lunch from home; nursery snacks consist of a free bagel and piece of fruit. Nursery children also qualify for free milk. Families taking the longer pattern therefore need to prepare lunch alongside the usual nursery essentials.
For concerns about additional needs, the first contact is the child’s class teacher. Parents can also reach the school’s SEND coordinator through the office and arrange a conversation or meeting. The coordinator holds the National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and a Postgraduate Diploma in Inclusive Education and Special Educational Needs.
Communication uses Arbor for messages, reminders and electronic letters. Parents can update medical information and contact details through its portal, keeping those practical details accessible to the school. Wider pastoral support includes help for families facing difficulties and referrals to external agencies when needed.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission to Yew Tree’s Reception. Families must make a separate application through Tameside Council’s coordinated admissions process, following the normal deadline for their application year. Nursery applications are handled by the school; Reception applications take a different route. Plan for both processes separately.
Government-funded provision includes 30 hours and a 15-hour choice of morning or afternoon places. Families using 15 funded hours can also pay for another 15 hours each week. Contact the school for current charges.
Funtasia provides before-school and after-school care for ages 3–11 in the infant hall. Bookings can cover mornings or afternoons on 1–5 days a week, with payment for the sessions booked; breakfast and an afternoon snack are included in its fees. This gives families a separate care option around school hours.
Uniform includes a white polo shirt, grey bottoms and a royal blue sweatshirt, cardigan or fleece; logos are optional on the polo shirt and blue layer. Label clothing and bags. Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 0161 338 3452 or admin@yewtree.victoriousmat.org, and nursery applications use the school’s application form.
