Numbered frogs in a water channel and minibeasts among the trees give Bishopsgate's early years provision its character: learning takes practical, playful forms. The nursery belongs to the pre-prep at this independent, mixed school in Englefield Green. Bishopsgate admits children from age 3. In March 2025, the nursery comprised one class, placing it within a school setting rather than a separate childcare provision.
Play and purposeful teaching work together here. At the ISI inspection of 25 to 27 March 2025, early years children combined activities directed by adults with time to investigate for themselves, using resources both indoors and outside. This gives children opportunities to follow an interest as well as learn with an adult's guidance.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) takes concrete form through language, numbers, exploration and learning alongside other children. Staff develop children's vocabulary through conversation, picking up their ideas and helping them say more about their experiences. Speaking becomes part of learning, rather than an activity reserved for a particular lesson.
A water channel makes number recognition playful: children send numbered frogs along it. Skittles bring another opportunity to practise, with scores marked on a chalkboard. These activities connect a number with something children can do and see. Outside, children learn to recognise insects, plants and trees. Exploring nature also involves responsibility: children understand that small creatures need gentle handling. The outdoor environment serves as a place for learning, cooperation and physical exploration.
Independence grows through manageable tasks. In March 2025, early years children tackled things for themselves, with adults supporting their exploration. Children included others in their play and helped one another descend trees safely. Sharing resources and waiting for a turn were part of their social learning; older pupils also played with early years children at breaktimes, supporting confidence across age groups.
Leadership connects directly with classroom teaching: the Head of EYFS also holds a nursery teaching role. Early years staff meet regularly with their leaders to discuss children and training needs, keeping attention on individual development as well as the team's practice.
Safety has practical support. Early years staff receive paediatric first-aid training, and supervision arrangements cover this part of the school day. For parents, those are relevant foundations beneath the freedom children have to explore.
Reception admission. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat the next stage as a separate admission: apply again through the normal process and meet the applicable deadline. Familiarity with school life should not be mistaken for an admission entitlement.
