Nursery at Woodlands Primary School

Crawling, early words and outdoor exploration give Hedgehogs its character: Woodlands Primary School now includes a nursery room for babies aged 9–24 months alongside provision for older nursery children. The nursery takes children aged 2–3, with pre-school for ages 3–4. That makes the youngest room a distinct part of the offer, with activities built around babies’ development.
The purpose-built nursery and pre-school occupy the Infant department. A qualified teacher works with teaching assistants in this provision, placing early education within the school’s physical setting. In January 2023, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate rating for the new baby room.
Hedgehogs follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for early learning and care. Here, its focus translates into movement, communication and relationships: babies practise reaching and grasping, pull themselves upright and move along furniture. These are small steps with a clear purpose, building strength and coordination at each child’s pace.
Conversation runs through play. Adults respond to gestures and emerging words, name the things children handle, and use stories and songs to develop understanding. Repeated exchanges give children opportunities to express themselves before fluent speech arrives. Shared play and supported turn-taking also introduce the social side of a nursery day.
Outdoor exploration includes different textures and weather. Hedgehogs’ summer activities include sensory experiences around minibeasts and seasonal songs, connecting early language with things children can touch, hear and investigate. Suitable clothing matters because outdoor play continues across different weather conditions.
The early years picture has both a strength and a qualification. In January 2023, children shared resources considerately. However, the learning content needed clearer definition in one or two subjects, leaving some children less prepared for later learning. For parents, that places everyday social development alongside a specific curriculum improvement priority.
Consistent care and responsive interactions are the basis of Hedgehogs’ approach to attachment. Staff respond to children’s needs and help them recognise routines and handle feelings. The nursery aims to make those relationships a secure base for exploration, an especially relevant consideration for babies beginning time away from home.
Tapestry connects home and nursery. Staff add to each child’s learning journey, while parents can contribute experiences from home. This gives families a way to share the interests and discoveries that may carry into nursery play.
For Hedgehogs, families bring a bottle and formula when needed, plus a sheet and blanket for sleep. Nursery snacks attract a contribution; ask the school for current charges. These care supplies and extras belong in the practical planning alongside booked hours.
Parents with concerns about special educational needs or disabilities can arrange a discussion with the school’s SEND co-ordinator through the office. This provides a direct contact for discussing a child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
For the September 2026 intake, applications went to Cheshire West and Chester Council, either online or in writing, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, even when both concern Woodlands.
Morning nursery and pre-school sessions run from 08:45 to 11:45; afternoons run from 12:30 to 15:30. Full days begin at 08:45 and finish at either 14:45 or 15:30, depending on funding and charges. The older provision offers five mornings or five afternoons, with some flexibility to combine attendance into full days.
Children become eligible for 15 funded hours from the term after their third birthday. Eligibility conditions apply to 30-hour funding, and additional sessions can be purchased. Families should check eligibility through Childcare Choices and obtain current charges from the school before choosing their attendance pattern.
Nursery and pre-school applications go directly to the school using an application form. Enquiries can be made at Infant Reception or by calling 0151 329 3164. In Hedgehogs, label belongings and supply spare clothing and suitable outdoor layers. Tell staff promptly if a different adult will collect: collection requires a password.
