Nursery at Chase Side Primary School

At a Glance

Familiar stories, songs and rhymes give Chase Side’s nursery its clearest character: early reading begins with children listening and joining in. This is the school’s own nursery on Trinity Street in Enfield, taking children in the September before their fourth birthday. Families can choose a morning pattern or a longer nursery day.

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 January 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Both session patterns begin at 8.45am. Morning children finish at 11.45am, while the longer day ends at 3.15pm. The shared starting time gives families a consistent morning routine; the difference is how much of the day their child spends in nursery.

Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, the concrete examples are language and early number work: in January 2022, nursery children participated in familiar rhymes, songs and stories, while children across early years counted backwards and forwards daily. Counting supported their understanding of subtraction and addition. These are foundations children can practise through repetition.

Well-being, Future and World are the named curriculum drivers on the nursery’s curriculum page. Their aims connect valuing oneself with developing learning habits, communicating clearly and understanding diversity. The school’s curriculum plans also describe experiences supporting language development from nursery onwards, giving children contexts in which to express themselves.

Care and Support

Settling begins before September. The normal nursery induction includes an evening family information meeting around late June or early July, with paperwork completed before July ends. Home visits follow in early September, alongside Stay and Play during the first week. Children then begin in stages, normally completing their starts by the end of September. The timetable is adjusted around individual children’s needs, so families should plan for a gradual beginning.

School lunches are offered to nursery pupils and carry a separate charge. The school’s kitchen prepares food on the premises each day, and ParentPay is used to book lunches. Its meal arrangements require families to keep the same packed-lunch or school-dinner choice throughout a half term. This makes lunch a decision to organise ahead of time. The school also prohibits foods containing nuts.

For SEND enquiries, the contact route includes an Inclusion Manager and SENDCo. The inclusion page links families to Enfield’s Local Offer and SENDIASS, providing routes to information and advice alongside contact with school.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Enfield Council’s admissions portal, following the normal process and the deadline for their child’s entry year. Chase Side’s admissions procedure explicitly rules out an automatic transfer. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to make sense for the nursery experience itself.

Once a Reception place has been offered, the school’s normal induction includes a family meeting, home visits, Stay and Play and a phased, initially part-time start. This is preparation for the next stage, separate from securing admission.

Practical Information

The 15-hour pattern runs from Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 11.45am. The longer pattern, labelled a 30-hour place, runs on the same weekdays until 3.15pm. Its timetable includes additional charged hours beyond the funded entitlement. Ask the office for current charges.

Access to the 30-hour funding depends on meeting the government’s eligibility criteria and obtaining a code within the relevant application window. Children also need a nursery registration through Enfield admissions. Additional-hours payments are made through ParentPay at least two weeks ahead; failure to pay in advance results in a return to the 15-hour pattern.

The lower gate on Trinity Street opens at 8.45am, and morning nursery finishes at 11.45am. Nursery uniform guidance is grouped with Reception’s. For enquiries or to arrange a school tour, contact the office on 0208 363 1120 or office@chaseside.enfield.sch.uk.
