Nursery at Raglan Infant School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A purpose-built nursery, an outdoor area open throughout the year and stories in small groups give Raglan’s youngest children a day shaped around play and language. This is Raglan Infant School’s provision for children aged three to four in Enfield, with 90 places across three classes. It has its own nursery building within the wider school setting.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 9 and 10 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery-specific reading finding was concrete: children were learning to recognise and repeat initial sounds while adults read to them.

The Nursery Day

Teacher-led carpet time gives way to children choosing activities in the classroom or outdoors. Staff watch those choices to help children balance their activities. The outdoor area operates year-round, so outdoor learning is part of the ordinary session. A reading corner is also accessible during this choice time, with books changed regularly.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for learning through play, exploration and adult teaching across seven areas. Raglan uses Development Matters to plan that learning, combining class themes with children’s interests and information from home. Adults introduce activities; children also pursue their own ideas. That gives parents a useful picture of the balance between teaching and independent play.

Language receives substantial attention. Little Wandle Foundations uses stories, rhymes and listening games to develop awareness of sounds and conversation skills. Nursery children hear stories in small groups three times a week, while chatterbox provides targeted speech and language support. In July 2024, adults’ use of familiar rhymes, songs and poems supported children’s communication through skilful interaction.

Learning extends into the neighbourhood. Nursery activities include posting letters, visiting Ridge Avenue Library and pond dipping at Bury Lodge Park. These give classroom ideas a practical purpose: a letter can reach someone, and a park becomes somewhere to investigate. Parents join the termly bookies and cookies sessions for activities and a shared story.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first ordinary session. There are two stay-and-play opportunities, with a teacher meeting for children new to Raglan. Starters join in small groups, generally beginning with a half day. Staff and parents agree a further plan if a child needs more time, and families receive a call if distress continues despite staff support. Each nursery class has a qualified teacher and additional adults for the under-five staffing requirements.

Food offers a practical choice. Children receive fruit each day and can bring a packed lunch or have a charged hot meal. Aspens prepares meals on site; its rotating three-week menu accommodates vegan, halal and vegetarian diets alongside other dietary requirements. Parents select meals through Arbor and should discuss allergies with the school.

For children needing additional help, the early years findings from July 2024 described growing confidence, curiosity and independence among children with SEND. Families can contact the SENDCo team at senco@raglanschools.org. Arbor also supports communication and updates to family details, keeping everyday administration in one place.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through their local authority by the deadline for their entry year. For September 2026 entry, Raglan reminded nursery parents to apply by 15 January 2026; that deadline has passed.

Familiarity is supported separately from admission. Nursery children visit the Reception classrooms in small groups to become accustomed to the new surroundings. This helps make the next environment recognisable, but does not secure a place.

Practical Information

The nursery opens at 08:30 and closes at 15:30. Raglan’s 2026 nursery options cover 15 to 35 hours a week. Parents provide their preferred hours when classes are organised, so the attendance pattern is part of planning the child’s place.

Raglan Wrap Club adds care before and after school, operating from 07:30 to 18:00 in term time for ages three to eleven. It is based in the Junior School, with an entrance on Raglan Road. Book through Magic Booking; it is not a drop-in service.

Nursery children are handed over at their classroom door. Enquiries go to office@raglanschools.org. Prospective-parent tours run between October and January and are booked through TicketSource. Ask the school for current nursery and meal charges.
