Stories, songs and exploration give Meadow’s nursery its clearest character. The provision opened in September 2022 for children aged two to four, placing the youngest children within Meadow Primary School in Stoneleigh. This is the school’s own nursery, with early learning forming part of a curriculum that continues through the school.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 21 and 22 September 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery had opened just three weeks before that visit, an important context for those findings.
Exploration was a clear feature in September 2022. Children, including the two-year-olds, were interested in discovering their surroundings, with adults helping them as they explored. For a parent choosing a first educational setting, that describes a starting point built around children’s curiosity and adult guidance.
Language also had a practical place in the day. In September 2022, adults regularly read stories and sang with children in early years, and Nursery children were already expressing preferences about what they wanted to hear. Listening was becoming a matter of personal choice as well as participation. Those repeated encounters with songs and stories helped develop enthusiasm for reading.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sits within Meadow’s progression of knowledge, vocabulary and skills. In parent terms, the learning has a sequence: the school identifies what children should learn and the points they should reach. Meadow uses Power Maths across the EYFS and follows Little Wandle Letters and Sounds for early reading in the EYFS. These named programmes give the early years curriculum a defined approach to mathematics and phonics, alongside the stories, singing and exploration described above.
Adult guidance is the clearest nursery-specific care detail from September 2022. Staff helped children explore their surroundings; this finding also covered two-year-olds. The youngest children were therefore included in the early years observations, rather than appearing only in the school’s age range.
The same inspection judged safeguarding effective across the school. Staff had training to recognise possible harm, and safeguarding leaders exchanged information and acted promptly to help families. This was a school-wide finding.
There were also school-wide concerns about teaching in foundation subjects: work was not consistently adapted sufficiently for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and teachers needed greater clarity about the essential knowledge pupils should retain. These concerns should not be recast as nursery-specific findings, but they matter when considering the wider school’s support and curriculum.
Attending Meadow’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and obtaining a school place are separate decisions; nursery attendance should not be treated as an assurance about the later allocation.
