Nursery at Nonsuch Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Environmental sounds and nature play give Nonsuch’s nursery its early learning character. Ducklings and Chicks are the nursery classes at this primary school in Stoneleigh, serving children aged three and four. The provision belongs to the school’s early years team, with a nursery teacher and teaching assistant.

Its future needs careful consideration. On 15 July 2026, the school announced a proposal for the nursery to close from January 2027. The consultation ended on 18 September 2026 at 5pm. This was a proposed closure, so families planning nursery attendance into 2027 need to take that proposal into account.

The Nursery Day

Listening comes before formal phonics here. Children explore sounds around them as their introduction to Schofield & Sims My Letters and Sounds. That gives parents a concrete picture of early phonics: investigating environmental sounds rather than beginning with the more formal teaching that follows nursery.

Birth to 5 sits alongside the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. In practice, the nursery’s sound exploration and the early years outdoor provision connect learning with things children can hear, handle and investigate. The renovated EYFS outdoor area includes natural materials and spaces for exploratory play, bringing contact with nature into the learning environment.

Forest School-style learning is the school’s intended direction for this space, within a three-year expansion plan. The distinction matters: the outdoor area has been renovated, while the wider Forest School provision remains a developing ambition.

For children entitled to 15 hours, the morning runs from 8:50am until noon. Those entitled to 30 hours have an 8:50am start and a 3pm finish, with nursery registration completed by 9am. The longer day also means packing lunch.

Care and Support

Lunch is brought from home rather than supplied by the nursery. For families using Junior Adventure Group, known as JAG, breakfast and an after-school snack are provided through that separate wraparound service.

Additional needs are handled through the school’s SEND structure. Support is matched to the child after assessment, with outside agencies involved where appropriate. Parents begin by speaking with the class teacher; concerns can then pass to the special educational needs coordinator. This gives families a clear first contact and a route to more specialised discussion.

Preparation before starting has included a welcome booklet for the September 2021 intake, using pictures to introduce adults and nursery activities. Families in that intake also received individual start-date information. These are historical examples of preparation, rather than a promise about the current settling process.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Nonsuch. Families must make a separate application through their council, using either the London Borough of Sutton or Surrey County Council route. The Reception application deadline is 15 January.

Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. Learning within the school’s early years provision does not remove the need to apply again by that deadline.

Practical Information

Part-time attendance can be a morning or afternoon session, and full-time places are also offered. A limited number of 30-hour places are available. Eligible families can receive an additional 15 funded hours; families who do not qualify can pay for an additional 15 hours. Contact the school for current charges.

JAG extends care from 7:30am until 6:15pm through its breakfast and after-school clubs. Nursery families can use these clubs, giving a longer childcare span than the nursery session itself.

Drop-off uses the EYFS gate. At collection, parents use the same gate and wait beside the classroom door. The school must be told if another parent will collect a child, so collection arrangements need to be communicated in advance.

Uniform includes grey trousers, a skirt or pinafore, a white shirt or polo shirt, and a royal blue cardigan or sweatshirt. Nursery children must not wear earrings. Enquiries go to office@nonsuch.school or 020 8393 9209; nursery applications are handled directly by the school.

FAQs

The nursery serves three- and four-year-olds. Children can join in September, January or April after their third birthday.

Children entitled to 15 hours attend from 8:50am to noon. For those entitled to 30 hours, the day runs from 8:50am to 3pm. Morning and afternoon part-time options are offered.

No. A separate application is required through the London Borough of Sutton or Surrey County Council, with a deadline of 15 January.

Nursery lunch is not provided, so children staying for lunch need a packed lunch. JAG provides breakfast and an after-school snack for children using its clubs.

The school announced a proposal on 15 July 2026 to close the nursery from January 2027. Consultation ran until 5pm on 18 September 2026. The announcement describes a proposal, not a confirmed closure.
