A formerly industrial town of around 45,000 on the south bank of the Thames, Erith has been part of the London Borough of Bexley since 1965, when it transferred from the historical county of Kent. The curved riverside high street holds three listed buildings, including the Carnegie Building. London's longest pier stretches into the estuary, with salt marshes and remaining industrial land fringing the waterfront.
Thamesmead, the post-war estate on the border with Greenwich, is among the most sought-after pockets for primary school places in this corner of south-east London. Northumberland Heath and Erith itself draw family buyers further inland. Erith station provides services on the Dartford Loop Line to London Bridge and Cannon Street.
