In the valley of the River Darent, where a ford gave the medieval town its name, Dartford sits at the northern edge of Kent between the Thames Estuary and the North Downs. The town grew from a medieval market into an industrial centre of paper mills and river trades. Around 51,000 people live here today.

Dartford Town Centre is the focal point for families competing for school places across the borough, drawing catchment-conscious parents to the streets above the valley floor. Stone and Westgate extend the borough northward toward the Dartford Crossing, which spans the Thames to Thurrock in Essex, while Cobham lies to the south near the chalk escarpment. Southeastern services from Dartford station connect to London Cannon Street and London Bridge in around forty minutes.
