At a Glance

Weekly Forest School gives this nursery a distinctive outdoor thread. Children use an onsite Forest School area throughout the year, alongside indoor play and exploration in the school grounds. For families who value learning outdoors, that is a concrete part of the nursery experience.

Opened in September 2022, the nursery at Haberdashers' Slade Green Primary serves three- and four-year-olds. Capacity is a maximum of 52 children, with no more than 26 attending together, subject to approved or required changes. The actual number enrolled depends on the balance between 15-hour places and the limited 30-hour offer. Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 28 and 29 February 2024; this covers the school's early years rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play has a clear purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum has seven learning areas, with activities adapted to children's needs and interests. In parent terms, children learn through exploration and interaction, with adults initiating some activities and children choosing others. Open-ended resources give them scope to try their own ideas.

Language is a tangible part of that learning. In February 2024, nursery children practised songs and rhymes whose repeated phrases and patterns supported communication. Across early years, a water tray and an expressive arts station encouraged imaginative exploration and taking risks. These are practical ways to develop speech and experiment with ideas.

Outdoor learning extends beyond the classroom. The onsite Forest School area is used weekly across the year, giving children repeated opportunities to explore their surroundings. Parents can also join weekly reading sessions with their child and attend curriculum workshops, connecting learning at nursery with home.

Care and Support

Nursery teachers and a nursery nurse sit within an early years team led by a Head of Early Years. All teachers hold Qualified Teacher Status. For children with SEND entering early years, settling support includes home visits, stay-and-play sessions and transition booklets; a phased start can be arranged when required. That gives families practical ways to prepare for a new routine.

Parents can raise developmental concerns with the class teacher or SENCo. SEN Support Plans are reviewed with parents and children each term, and a speech and language therapist works in school termly. These arrangements provide points for discussing needs and reviewing support.

Teaching adaptations. In February 2024, early years assessments established children's starting points, but the school-wide inspection concern was that pupils with SEND or difficulty keeping pace sometimes lacked the teaching adjustments they needed. Families whose children need additional support should discuss how activities and resources will be adapted for their child.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application using their home local authority's common application form, following its normal admissions timetable. For most applicants, that authority is Bexley. Choosing the nursery therefore requires a separate decision and application for school entry.

Transition preparation is a different matter. The move towards Reception begins gradually in the summer term under the Head of Early Years. For children with SEND moving between classes, information passes through SEN Support Plans, with planning meetings and extra classroom visits where required. These steps support familiarity and continuity of care; they do not change admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Children can start in the term following their third birthday and must be toilet trained. The 15-hour funded offer runs for 38 weeks each year. Three-hour daily places sit alongside a limited number of 30-hour places; families using a 30-hour funded place can pay to extend collection to 3:15pm. Contact the school for current charges.

For 2024/25, morning sessions ran from 8:30am to 11:30am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and full-time attendance from 8:30am to 2:30pm. Treat those as dated session patterns when planning childcare.

Applications go directly to the school and are welcomed throughout the year. Four weeks' notice is required to withdraw a place. School tours take place on Wednesdays at 9am: book by calling 01322 402 188. The nursery is on Chrome Road, Slade Green, Erith, DA8 2EL; enquiries can also go to sladegreenadmin@habstrustsouth.org.uk.
