Language comes first in Acorns, the nursery at St. Paul's (Slade Green) Church of England Primary School on Slade Green Road, Erith. It sits within a Church of England primary school, with funded early education for eligible three- and four-year-olds. The practical appeal is a school nursery whose early learning gives communication a clear place.
At the Ofsted inspection on 19 and 20 September 2023, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Children's interests and individual needs shape learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, the school aims for children to build social confidence, express themselves and explore independently alongside acquiring new skills. For parents, that means early education is about learning to communicate and manage relationships as well as preparation for later classroom learning.
Indoor and outdoor learning environments both form part of this approach. Adults watch children's activity, offer support and help take their learning further; exploration is intended to follow children's curiosity. The emphasis is on responding to the child, with planned activities and spaces supporting discovery.
In September 2023, communication and language received concentrated attention in Nursery. This gives families a concrete educational emphasis to weigh: developing children's ability to express themselves is part of their preparation for subsequent learning.
Snack provision includes milk and bagels alongside vegetables and fruit, all free of charge. Children attending for 30 hours need a packed lunch supplied by their parents, following the school's allergy and healthy eating requirements. Lunch therefore needs to be included in the family's daily preparation.
Parents also provide their child's consumables, including wipes, nappies and suncream, at their own expense. These everyday supplies sit separately from funded education.
For children needing additional help, the wider school's support includes individual speech and language programmes designed by a therapist, delivered individually or in groups and carried into daily school activity. This is school-level provision; it should not be read as a promise of a particular nursery intervention.
Attending Acorns does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's intake.
For the September 2025 intake, applications used the home local authority's online Common Application Form, with a deadline of 15 January 2025. A supplementary information form, birth certificate copy and address evidence also had to reach the school by that deadline. Those dates belong to a past admissions cycle; families planning a later intake need to follow that cycle's timetable.
Eligible three- and four-year-olds can receive up to 15 or 30 funded hours. Access to those hours does not depend on buying extra time, services or consumables. Additional private hours are optional and depend on places being available, so funding and extra childcare are separate decisions.
Optional visits or workshops may also be offered. Declining them does not affect a funded place. Invoices distinguish funded provision from chargeable hours and itemise extras, helping families see what each charge covers.
