Storytelling, small-world play and cooking give the nursery curriculum at Clyst Heath its character. This is nursery provision within Clyst Heath Nursery and Community Primary School in Exeter, part of the Cornerstone Academy Trust. The Trust aims to encourage curious, imaginative learners and to plan learning around children's interests and needs.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning and care. Here, its curriculum covers communication, physical development and relationships alongside early reading, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning to explain an idea or manage a disagreement belongs alongside recognising a number. These are connected skills.
For children aged three to four, the communication objectives include following instructions with two parts, discussing familiar books and sustaining a conversation. Rhymes and syllable clapping feature in early literacy, while pretend shopping lists give early writing a purpose. The focus extends beyond recognising letters to using language in play and conversation.
Mathematics starts with concrete quantities: matching objects to numerals up to five, comparing amounts and exploring shapes. Construction kits and blocks feature in imaginative small-world work, giving children materials with which to develop their own ideas. Colour mixing, drawing and making music sit alongside this practical exploration.
Nature also has a place in the learning objectives. Planting seeds and tending plants introduce growth and care for living things. The Trust's nursery cooking programme adds another practical strand: Easy Apple Muffins in autumn, Banana Bread in spring and Frozen Fruity Yoghurt Bites in summer. Food becomes something to explore and make, as well as something to eat.
Independence is a curriculum goal, including managing coats, using the toilet and washing hands. Emotional development receives attention too: children work towards naming feelings, understanding other people's emotions and resolving disagreements through talk. These objectives connect personal care with learning to take part in a group.
Support for additional needs follows the Trust's Assess, Plan, Do, Review approach, using Devon's Graduated Response Tool. That gives support a cycle of planning, action and review rather than a single intervention. For targeted or specialist help, the Trust uses its speech and language therapist and school nurse, with referrals to external services where necessary. The emphasis is on responding to the child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Devon Admissions by the normal deadline for their child's entry year. Devon County Council's Admissions Team administers applications for Clyst Heath. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions, with a fresh application needed for the next stage.
The school is on Royal Crescent, Clyst Heath, Exeter, EX2 7QT. For general enquiries, contact the Trust administration team at admin@tcat.education or call 01392 304040. Curriculum enquiries can also go to that email address. Keep the nursery enquiry separate from the Reception application: the latter goes through Devon Admissions.
