Learning to choose confidently and look after others gives Exeter Cathedral School’s nursery its character. For children aged 3 to 4, this is the first stage of an independent school in central Exeter, with a nursery class forming part of its early years provision.
The September 2024 ISI inspection found that early years staff used the learning environment and resources effectively to build independence. Cooperation mattered too: children were encouraged to help their peers and practise considerate behaviour. For parents, the emphasis is on both what children learn and how they learn to spend time together.
Children’s interests shape the learning. In September 2024, teaching in the early years responded to individual needs, with planned activities extending children’s curiosity and understanding. Children progressed well relative to where they began. That makes personal starting points more useful here than an expectation that everyone should develop at the same pace.
Choice is part of that approach. Staff used the surroundings and learning materials to help children become confident decision-makers, giving them opportunities to practise independence alongside supported learning. Early years leaders also gave staff guidance that supported children’s learning and progress.
Physical development has a place alongside curiosity and social learning. Early years activities developed both smaller, precise movements and larger body movements, supporting the different physical skills young children need. Consideration for others was made concrete through everyday actions, including keeping a door open for someone else. These are practical habits children can use beyond an activity or lesson.
Supervision provides a clear foundation for the day. In September 2024, early years staffing met the required ratios, and adults maintained visual or audible contact with children. This connects staffing arrangements directly to children’s everyday care.
Emotional support also reached the youngest pupils: children across the early years knew adults were available when they needed help. Alongside the emphasis on helping peers, this gives children both people to turn to and ways to support one another.
Policy upkeep. At the September 2024 inspection, the school corrected an attendance policy that had fallen behind statutory guidance. Keeping policies aligned with changing guidance remained a recommended action, a relevant consideration for families relying on clear school procedures.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application and follow the applicable admissions process and deadline. Choosing the nursery for its daily experience should therefore remain a separate decision from securing the next school place.
The school offers individual tours, tailored to a family’s interests and questions. Their length can vary, allowing parents to focus their visit on what matters to their child.
