Language, number and growing confidence with other people characterised Rockbeare's pre-school at the inspection on 27 April 2022. Children learnt words for their experiences, explored numbers and related confidently to adults and positively to other children. These are practical foundations: being able to explain an idea matters alongside being able to count.
The provision belongs to Rockbeare Church of England Primary School and Pre-School, a Church of England primary school in Rockbeare, Exeter. The school’s age range begins at three; its pre-school sits within that wider school community. The nursery-specific findings from April 2022 give a picture of learning and support, rather than a separate nursery inspection grade.
Conversation had a clear educational purpose in April 2022. In April 2022, staff helped pre-school children build vocabulary to explain what they noticed and experienced. For a young child, that connects learning with things they can describe themselves. Language is part of making sense of experience.
Number learning also featured prominently, with frequent opportunities for children to develop their understanding. At that point, leaders were still developing the early mathematics curriculum further. That qualification matters: the positive picture of number learning came alongside work still in progress, rather than a finished curriculum whose changes had already been evaluated.
Early reading brought another strand to the April 2022 findings. Staff working in the pre-school had training in phonics, understood the programme and used teaching methods judged effective in April 2022. This gave the adults supporting younger children a shared understanding of how sounds and letters connect.
Social learning also featured in April 2022. Children related positively to one another and approached adults confidently. Being comfortable talking to an adult gives children a way to ask for help as well as share what interests them.
In April 2022, support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) involved collaboration between pre-school staff, school staff and parents. That joint work helped identify children’s needs and build a shared understanding of how to support their learning. Parents contributed to that understanding, rather than sitting outside it.
The practical value was continuity between the adults involved. Understanding a child’s needs together gave staff and parents a common basis for discussing what helped that child learn. The inspection’s pre-school findings also described children who were comfortable interacting with adults, an important part of being able to communicate a difficulty or seek reassurance.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process. Becoming familiar with the school through nursery attendance should therefore be treated separately from securing a school place.
