Play indoors and outdoors, shared stories and an early introduction to school routines shape White Horse Pre-School at Uffington Church of England Primary School. This is provision within the school’s early years unit, bringing pre-school and Reception together. Children can start in the term following their third birthday, with entry in September, January or April.
The school aims to build confidence through familiarity with adults and everyday routines. For families choosing a school-based start, that familiarity is the central attraction. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 12 and 13 July 2022; that judgement covers early years rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The morning begins at 9am, with a break usually around 10.30am to 10.45am, adjusted to suit the activities. Lunch comes at noon. The afternoon starts at 1pm, and the pre-school day finishes at 3pm. These give the day clear landmarks while allowing the morning break to follow the children’s activity.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS. In parent terms, this combines developing movement, language and relationships with early maths, literacy, creativity and exploration of the world. Adults lead some play activities; children choose and initiate others. Both indoor and outdoor learning are part of this approach, giving children opportunities to explore problems and practise interacting with others.
Rocket Phonics provides daily phonics teaching across the Foundation Stage, while Rising Stars reading books are matched to phonics phases. In July 2022, early years children showed enthusiasm for story characters and rhymes, sustained attention and independence in their learning.
Checking understanding. The July 2022 inspection identified that teaching in early years sometimes advanced before children, including those with SEND, had securely grasped key ideas. This matters when judging how staff adapt activities to individual understanding. A separate school-wide concern involved inconsistent phonics teaching and books that did not match taught sounds; it should not be read as a nursery-only finding.
Familiarity is part of the school’s intended preparation: children get to know staff, routines and school expectations within the early years unit. The emphasis is on becoming comfortable with school life as well as developing learning skills.
Support sits within the school’s SEND provision, which covers communication difficulties, learning needs, emotional and mental health needs, and sensory or physical needs. The special educational needs coordinator is onsite on Tuesdays, one day each week. That gives families a specific point in the weekly pattern for specialist coordination.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal Oxfordshire County Council route and meet the normal application deadline.
Getting to know school adults and routines is useful preparation, but it is separate from allocating places. Treat choosing the pre-school and applying for Reception as two decisions.
Funded places and additional-hours placements are offered. Discuss current charges with the school when arranging additional hours.
