Nursery at Fairfield Infant School

Two three-hour sessions give Fairfield’s nursery its practical shape: 26 places in the morning and 26 in the afternoon, making 52 places overall. This is Fairfield Infant School’s own provision on High Road West in Felixstowe. Children begin in the academic year in which they are 3, a distinction that matters when planning a start around a birthday.
A nursery manager forms part of the Fairfield team. The school building is single storey and has step-free access, a concrete consideration for families managing mobility needs.
The morning runs from 8.40am to 11.40am; the afternoon starts at 12.20pm and finishes at 3.20pm. Lunch occupies the interval from 11.40am to 12.20pm. These separate session boundaries give families clear times around which to organise the rest of the day.
Learning about sounds begins in Nursery through Essential Letters and Sounds. The starting point is listening to sounds in the surrounding world, supporting speaking and listening before children move towards matching sounds with letters. For parents, that gives the early reading work a concrete focus: noticing and talking about what children hear.
Before starting, children and parents are invited to spend time at the nursery and become familiar with it. This gives both a chance to get to know the setting together before the child begins attending.
For additional needs, the federation’s approach starts with the class teacher, who can respond to concerns and make adjustments. Where more input is needed, the teacher refers internally to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo). Families therefore have a defined first contact rather than needing to decide which specialist to approach.
The school aims to plan support with families, actively seeking their views. Individual accessibility requirements can also be discussed, so the step-free building sits alongside a route for considering a child’s particular needs.
Attending Fairfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
Suffolk County Council processes applications for the beginning of Reception. The route is the council’s online application form; families unable to apply online can obtain a paper form through the school or council. Keep this application separate from the nursery arrangements when planning the next stage.
Contact Fairfield’s office on 01394 283206 or email fairfieldoffice@fairfieldandcolneis.co.uk for nursery enquiries. Nursery application forms come from the school and are returned there with the child’s original birth certificate; the school can take a copy.
Nursery entry and collection use the Nursery gate. Access to the school site is through High Road West or the gates on Fairfield Avenue. The small car park is reserved for staff unless school leadership has agreed otherwise, so families travelling by car need to plan safe, considerate parking nearby.
Children start in the academic year in which they are 3. Parents can apply once their child reaches 2, whether they live inside or outside the school’s catchment area.
