Nursery at Fairholme Primary School

Herbs for cooking, chicks hatching in classrooms and outdoor play in every kind of weather give Fairholme’s nursery its practical character. This is the school’s provision for three-year-olds, on Peacock Avenue in Feltham, with morning sessions that finish before midday. For families, that means a short nursery day rather than a full day of childcare.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 22 and 23 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play and adult conversation shape the learning. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), supported by Development Matters. In everyday terms, children build their learning in small steps, with their interests and needs helping to guide the experiences adults provide. Staff join children’s play to demonstrate skills, discuss successes and suggest improvements, so exploration comes with adult guidance.
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces are planned to encourage conversation. First-hand experiences include raising herbs for actual and pretend cooking, and watching chicks hatch in classrooms. These give children something concrete to investigate and talk about. Nursery children also go outdoors in all weathers, making suitable clothing part of the daily preparation.
Early reading begins with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised, with nursery phonics concentrating on oral blending: joining spoken sounds together. Rainbow children borrow a nursery book each Friday to enjoy at home and return the following week. Sharing it together connects the nursery’s reading work with family routines.
Language development. In October 2024, adults helped early years children articulate ideas and use complete sentences, but language teaching needed a more systematic sequence. Essential vocabulary and knowledge were not consistently clear enough. For parents, the useful focus is how everyday conversation develops into planned learning of specific words and concepts.
Learning Journals connect home and nursery through pictures, children’s words and staff observations. Parents can contribute learning and experiences from home, giving adults a fuller picture of the child. Nursery staff welcome conversations after the session; appointments can also be arranged through the office. Across the school, Parent Hub carries regular updates, and parents’ evenings take place each term.
For concerns about learning, the first conversation is with the class teacher. The school’s SENCO coordinates additional provision with teachers, and the school works with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and CAMHS. This gives families a route from an initial concern to specialist involvement. The school also uses Zones Of Regulation to help children recognise emotions and discuss ways to manage them.
A named water bottle comes to nursery each day and can be refilled during the session. Children under five qualify for free school milk, with registration through Cool Milk. The school encourages healthy snacks for playtime, giving families a practical food routine for the morning.
Attending Fairholme’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery entry and Reception entry are separate processes: the school handles nursery applications, while Hounslow Council manages Reception admissions.
Families must apply again for a September Reception start through eAdmissions, by the middle of January. Treat that application as a separate task even if your child is already attending nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am. The finish time matters when arranging work or other childcare around the session.
Nursery uniform requires a white polo shirt and a red cardigan or sweatshirt. Keep a labelled change of clothes at school, bring a coat when needed, and provide a sun hat and apply sun cream in warmer weather. These preparations support the nursery’s all-weather outdoor routine.
