Songs, rhymes and stories do purposeful work at Reach Academy Feltham’s nursery: they develop the language children will draw on when they begin reading and writing. This is an on-site nursery for children aged 2–4, within an all-through school in Feltham. Its character is one of early learning connected to the next stage, with language given a clear starting role.
Nursery provision for two-year-olds began in 2015. At the Ofsted inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024, early years provision was judged Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language learning has a deliberate sequence. Nursery children encounter vocabulary, sounds and the structures of language through rhymes, songs and stories. These activities prepare them for phonics and writing, so familiar nursery experiences have a clear educational purpose. The emphasis is on building the foundations before children tackle the next skills.
The phonics programme begins during Nursery’s summer term. For parents, that places the start of phonics within the nursery year itself. It connects the earlier work with spoken language and sounds to learning to read.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), mathematics begins with patterns, number and shape. These are the early building blocks of mathematical learning. Together with the nursery’s language work, they give parents two concrete strands of the learning: developing what children can say and understand, and introducing the ideas they will use in mathematics.
A home visit begins the relationship with each family. Reach aims to understand the child alongside the people who support them outside school. That makes the family’s knowledge of their child part of the starting conversation, rather than treating nursery learning as separate from home life.
The team includes a Head of Nursery, nursery keyworkers and support staff. An Early Years SENCo provides a contact for special educational needs and disabilities. For families seeking inclusion support, that gives them an early years role to approach directly. In September 2024, children from Nursery onwards were happy and safe.
Attending Reach Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s Common Application Form, with admission coordinated by Hounslow.
Priority applies to nursery children who are eligible for the Early Years Pupil Premium. It is conditional, rather than an advantage shared by every nursery child. Families seeking consideration under the relevant criterion complete a Supplementary Information Form as well as the Common Application Form; the supplementary form alone is not an application.
