Play and everyday experience shape the early years at Michael Hall, where Saplings and Kindergarten belong to the school's Steiner Waldorf education. Saplings serves children aged 2-4; Kindergarten covers ages 4-6. This extends the early childhood approach beyond the usual Reception starting age.
At Forest Row's Kidbrooke Park, Saplings has a maximum of 8-10 children, while a Kindergarten class is considered complete at 15. These are group sizes, rather than a total nursery capacity. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the September 2024 inspection.
The Steiner Waldorf approach puts play and practical experience to work as learning. In September 2024, early years teaching used everyday situations and planned play activities, with the youngest children showing confidence and independence as they took part. Communication and language received attention from the beginning. For parents, the emphasis is on children learning through participation and interaction.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) provides the framework for early learning and care, but Kindergarten has exemptions from some of its learning and development requirements. That distinction matters when comparing Michael Hall with another nursery: its educational sequence follows a different pattern.
Oak Tree is an outdoor Kindergarten; Hazel Tree is another named Kindergarten option. Families can explore these through Stay and Play events, alongside sessions for Saplings. The distinction between outdoor Kindergarten and the other groups is a useful starting point when choosing the experience that suits a child.
Early Childhood has its own manager and deputy safeguarding lead, alongside teachers and assistants in Saplings and Kindergarten. In September 2024, Kindergarten children enjoyed playing together, supported by adults who helped them build relationships. Social interaction was part of the learning itself.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities, families must discuss requirements before interview and provide relevant assessment or medical reports. Admission depends on the support the Inclusion Department can provide and reasonable accommodation on the site. This makes an early discussion about the child's needs essential.
A welcome morning for Saplings and Kindergarten took place on 10 September 2026. This offered a specific introduction before the Early Childhood term began on 11 September.
School lunches are cooked on site and are mainly vegetarian. Fruit and vegetables are organic, with biodynamic produce from the school garden used when available. Orders and cancellations can be made until midnight before the meal is needed, allowing families to adjust lunch plans.
The February 2026 emergency inspection, commissioned following safeguarding concerns, found the checked standards met but identified weaker concern recording in Early Childhood than elsewhere, while explicitly finding that this did not expose children to harm. Leaders were developing those systems further. This is a concrete care issue for families to weigh alongside the early years teaching judgement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Here, the equivalent stage is the first Kindergarten year, for ages 4-5. Progression from Saplings requires a further application, made two full terms before the intended start.
Saplings children have priority for Kindergarten over other applicants, and internal progression comes first in the oversubscription order. Priority still depends on the school being able to meet the child's needs; admission to one school section does not guarantee entry to another. Families should therefore distinguish a priority application from an assured place.
Saplings requires at least three session blocks each week, using mornings or afternoons. Kindergarten starts with a minimum of four consecutive mornings, increasing to five in discussion with parents; five becomes compulsory from the term after the fifth birthday. Both groups exclude registration at multiple settings, although Saplings children may also attend Michael Hall's Parent and Child sessions with family.
Funding. Government Early Years Funding participation ended in September 2025. Families may apply for an annual discretionary supplement for the academic year covered by the current fee arrangements. Ask the school for current charges and supplement terms before budgeting.
Charges are organised by term and attendance pattern, with morning packages and a full-day option; the charging structure changes from the term a child turns five. Withdrawal requires written notice of a full term, otherwise a term's fees are payable. Enquiries go to the admissions team, and families can request a tour or register for an Early Childhood open event.
Saplings covers ages 2-4, and Kindergarten covers ages 4-6.
