Nursery at The Gainsborough Hillcrest Early Years Academy

A cabin with its own outdoor space and shelves children can choose from give Hillcrest’s nursery a clear emphasis: learning through exploration. Little Sparkles serves children aged 2 to 3, while Little Gems takes ages 3 to 4 in a nursery room with an outdoor classroom. Little Treasures is also part of the nursery provision at the Gainsborough academy on Heapham Road.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 29 and 30 April 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children’s enthusiasm for learning, language development and participation alongside peers with SEND were strengths of early years at that time.
Discovery Time gives children opportunities to investigate indoors and outside, alongside activities adults plan around learning objectives. Independent choosing shelves hold resources for construction, maths and small world play. Children can select materials and pursue an idea, making choice a practical part of the session.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides this play-based curriculum. In parent terms, adults plan learning through play and conversations, then observe how children’s skills develop. Development Matters sits alongside the Gem Power Project, which promotes perseverance, independence and resilience. The intention is to help children keep trying as well as learn new things.
Outdoor learning has distinct spaces. Little Sparkles can move between its cabin and outdoor area during Discovery Time. Little Gems has an outdoor classroom and access to the shared EYFS outdoor space, where children explore nature and practise larger movements. This gives active play a place alongside classroom activities.
Regular stories and classroom libraries introduce books early. In Little Gems, Little Wandle Foundation for Phonics supports spoken sound work and oral blending. In April 2025, children in early years enjoyed stories, and adults supported their speaking and language development effectively.
Starting nursery includes opportunities to meet adults and other children and explore the learning space. New to Nursery meetings bring parents into that preparation, while staff gather learning information and details of medical or additional needs. Familiarity begins before the first regular session.
For children needing additional support, the class teacher is the first contact. An Assess, Plan, Do and Review cycle links identified needs to interventions and checks whether they help. Plans are shared with parents, with targets reviewed together within three months. Early years observations are captured on Tapestry, and WELLCOM can help identify language strengths and areas needing support.
The school’s accessible features include ramps to key areas and a disabled toilet in the creative cabin. In April 2025, early years needs were identified promptly, and children with SEND received effective help to participate alongside other children.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Lincolnshire County Council’s normal school admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
Preparation for starting school includes transition sessions to meet the new teacher and classmates, information sharing from nursery and New to Reception meetings for parents. These help make the next setting familiar; they remain separate from the allocation of a place.
Morning nursery sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Both patterns apply to Little Treasures, Little Sparkles and Little Gems.
For children aged 3 and 4, funded provision includes up to 15 hours weekly across 38 term-time weeks, starting in the term following their third birthday. Hillcrest has a limited number of 30-hour places, with availability not guaranteed each year.
Uniform combines a dark purple top, grey trousers or skirt, a white shirt and flat black shoes. Uniform Direct in Gainsborough supplies it. Parents must identify who will bring and collect their child and provide at least two additional emergency contacts.
