Learning to communicate a need, share an activity and feel secure gives Warren Wood’s early years provision its character. Communication and emotional development lead the learning, with routines that help children understand what happens next. This is nursery provision within a specialist school in Gainsborough, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Ofsted’s May 2026 inspection judged early years to be a Strong standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision: it is not a separate nursery rating. Children’s developmental stages shape teaching, so the emphasis is on the next useful step for each child.
Adult-led learning sits alongside activities children initiate themselves. Staff demonstrate language, help children communicate feelings and needs, and support them to stay with an activity. Sharing, taking turns and doing things independently are learning goals in their own right. For a child with complex needs, these small steps can make participation easier.
The early years foundation stage covers seven learning areas, with communication and personal development receiving especially strong attention. Assessment helps staff choose what to teach next and adjust activities. Children develop confidence in communicating, greater independence and an interest in exploring, rather than following an identical pace.
Across Warren Wood, the communication approach includes Makaton signs, picture-based PECS and communication apps on iPads, selected according to individual need. These give children ways to express choices when speech is difficult. The school also has classrooms adapted for sensory needs and spaces for calming down. These are school-wide arrangements, distinct from the early years teaching judgement.
Predictable routines support emotional security. Early years staff help children move between activities and build the confidence to engage; training addresses children’s complex needs. Regular conversations with families include strategies for communication, emotional development and routines, helping adults use consistent approaches at home and school.
Joining support includes an implementation meeting with parents and professionals in the term before a pupil starts. The school’s class teams include a teacher and teaching assistants, with staffing matched to the group’s needs. Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists support staff where appropriate. Personal care is handled with dignity, while encouraging independence where possible.
The May 2026 inspection identified school-wide priorities to make progress across subjects and pathways clearer, to ensure enrichment develops pupils’ interests and talents more consistently, and to prevent practical barriers from restricting participation. For families, the useful focus is how their child’s next steps are demonstrated and how participation is supported.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Discuss Reception placement with the appropriate local authority. Warren Wood’s special-school arrangements mean that, in almost every case, admission requires an Education, Health and Care Plan. The Lincolnshire County Council SEND Team is the contact for placement enquiries.
Within school, changes of class are planned, and families receive a welcome letter introducing the new staff team. That preparation supports familiarity with the next class; it should not be confused with an admissions entitlement.
Warren Wood is on Middlefield Lane, Gainsborough. Contact the school office on 01427 615498 or at office.warren@msat.education for enquiries. General pupil opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 3pm; these are school hours, rather than a nursery session booking offer.
Events and updates are shared through Class Dojo, with the reception team helping families set up the app. This gives parents a practical way to keep track of school communications.
