Reading and growing independence give Hunts Grove’s pre-school its clearest character. This is provision on the school site at Harrier Way in Gloucester, with a gradual start rather than an immediate move into a full pattern of sessions. For a child beginning life away from home, that staged introduction matters.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 19 and 20 March 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning to read begins in pre-school. In March 2024, the early years curriculum placed sustained emphasis on reading alongside helping children become more independent. The practical implication is a start that combines early learning with becoming accustomed to routines and expectations.
The March 2024 findings also described children becoming comfortable with those routines quickly. Independence is part of the learning itself, rather than simply something children are expected to bring with them. This gives parents a useful sense of the provision’s educational direction: early reading and increasing confidence in school life.
Session attendance builds gradually as children become more confident. Children attend a single session each day, and the school recommends at least two sessions a week. That offers repeated opportunities to become familiar with the setting while keeping the initial adjustment manageable.
Settling starts with part-time attendance, followed by an increase in sessions as confidence develops. In March 2024, children in early years were settling happily, with many parents positive about their adjustment to school life. The staged start is therefore a concrete part of the care arrangements, as well as a booking consideration.
For additional needs, the school uses the Gloucestershire SEND Graduated Pathway. Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning action, putting it into practice and reviewing progress. Parents take part in termly reviews when their child receives SEN support, giving families regular opportunities to discuss goals and next steps.
School teaching adaptations include shorter pieces of information, repeated instructions and extra time to respond. Visual timetables are another option. These are school-wide arrangements, so their relevance depends on the individual child’s needs. Thrive is also used where appropriate to address emotional needs.
Attending Hunts Grove pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, using its Common Application Form and naming Hunts Grove as a preference. Gloucestershire County Council coordinates applications locally; the deadline is 15 January in the admission year.
For children with significant needs, SEND transition support can include a detailed plan where appropriate. Additional familiarisation sessions may be arranged where possible, and information sharing is agreed with families. These arrangements help prepare a child for change; they do not secure admission.
The pre-school registration form starts the enquiry process, but submitting it does not secure a place. Families are contacted in the term before the intended start or when a vacancy arises.
Session pattern. Attendance is limited to one session per day. Families planning childcare around pre-school should account for that restriction and the gradual increase during settling.
