Stories, rhymes and conversation give Longford Little Learners its character. This is Longford Park Primary Academy’s nursery for two- and three-year-olds, on the school site in Longford, Gloucester, and run by Gloucestershire Learning Alliance. The emphasis is on learning to communicate and becoming more independent, with familiar routines helping young children settle into group life.
In February 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. Nursery children were settled and calm, with relationships and predictable routines supporting their first learning habits.
Language is a clear focus from Nursery onwards. Adults demonstrate how to express ideas, explore whether children have understood and use their interests to introduce new vocabulary. Stories and rhymes provide early encounters with language. The practical benefit is that conversation becomes part of learning, rather than something reserved for a separate activity.
The early years foundation stage here develops confidence and independence alongside those communication skills. Children have opportunities to explore inside and outside, returning to things they have already learned and trying their skills again. In February 2026, the early years spaces were organised to support that exploration. This gives children room to practise, with adult interaction extending their learning.
Art begins with physical control. Early years activities work on grip, handling and movement before building towards skills such as painting, drawing and sculpture. For young children, the preparation matters as much as the finished picture: learning to control materials is part of learning to create.
Understanding the child is central to support. In February 2026, collaboration with families and other nurseries helped staff understand children’s interests, needs and starting points. Early years children with special educational needs and/or disabilities typically joined class learning through adapted provision and specialist materials.
The school’s SEND support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing its effect. Parents contribute to decisions, and support can involve changes to the environment or adult assistance. Speech and language therapists and educational psychologists are among the outside specialists the school can consult. These arrangements give families a way to discuss a concern and agree practical next steps.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal local authority admissions process, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year. For the 2025/26 admissions cycle, nursery attendance carried no oversubscription priority; places were prioritised by care status, siblings and distance.
Support with the change of class is a separate matter. For children with SEND, the school can create an individual enhanced transition plan, arrange meetings involving both teachers and schedule learning with the incoming teacher. Familiarity and preparation support the child, but do not determine admission.
