A pre-school inside the primary school building gives Norton Little Learners its defining character. Children can start from age 3 at Norton Church of England Primary School, becoming familiar with the setting while they are still in nursery. The physical connection matters: school surroundings are already part of their experience before any later move into Reception.
This is the school's own pre-school provision in Norton village. Its appeal is that early familiarity, rather than a promise about the next admissions stage. Choosing the nursery and securing a Reception place remain separate decisions.
At the March 2022 inspection, pre-school children began phonics through rhymes and listening activities. For a young child, the emphasis was on listening and language before fluent reading: a concrete starting point for understanding how words work.
Mathematical foundations also receive attention in the early years. Norton uses Ready to Progress statements to check children's grasp of basic concepts, with Little Learners included in this approach. The emphasis is on understanding the essentials before tackling the next stage. That gives families a useful picture of the learning priorities: language and mathematical understanding, rather than simply completing activities.
Curriculum foundations. In March 2022, some subjects did not establish the early-years knowledge children needed for later learning. Clearer sequencing was required from the early years onwards. The school also needed to respond faster when phonics assessments identified pupils requiring help. These concerns matter alongside the pre-school's early reading work; starting phonics early does not itself establish that subsequent support is timely.
Teaching-assistant support is part of Little Learners' staffing. One member of the teaching-assistant team works in the nursery on three afternoons each week, providing a concrete link between the pre-school and the wider school team.
For additional needs, Norton has a school SENCO and a dedicated contact email, senco@norton.gloucs.sch.uk. Families can use that route to begin a conversation about their child's needs. The school describes its curriculum as adaptable for children with SEND, using structured tasks, support with activities and learning through different senses. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a separate nursery support package.
Attending Norton Little Learners does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Being in the school building gives nursery children familiarity with their surroundings. Norton sees this as helping the eventual transition into school. Familiarity is useful preparation, but it must be kept separate from entitlement to a place.
