A start from age two, with language and familiar routines taking centre stage: Little Otters is Slimbridge Primary School’s pre-school provision. It sits within the primary school on St John’s Road in Slimbridge. This is the school’s nursery, so the relevant early-years judgement belongs to the school inspection.
Ofsted graded early years Good at the inspection on 3 and 4 October 2023. The early-years findings give families specific reasons to consider it: children became accustomed to expectations promptly, adults helped them develop their vocabulary, and relationships with staff were positive. Those details matter more to a young child’s experience than the school’s overall grade.
Language was a clear strength in October 2023. Across early years, children had frequent chances to develop their speech, with adults helping them understand unfamiliar words and put them to use. The practical emphasis is on using language meaningfully. For parents, that connects learning with a child’s ability to express ideas and understand other people.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum included different activities intended to engage children. Alongside that variety, children learned the setting’s routines promptly. Activities and expectations therefore both shaped their experience: something to interest them, and a familiar pattern to get used to.
Stories also feature in a specific Little Otters example. For World Book Day in February 2021, families were offered listening and viewing activities through Share a Story Corner. That was home learning during lockdown, rather than a description of today’s session timetable, but it shows a concrete way the youngest children were included in the school’s reading activities.
Little Otters has a playgroup leader and play assistants working with its youngest children. This identifies a nursery team within the wider school, giving families a clear point of connection for their child’s early experience.
Settling was positive across early years in October 2023: children adjusted readily to school life and quickly understood everyday expectations. Staff and children also had warm relationships. Together, those findings describe the human side of learning the routine, as well as the routine itself.
The school’s SEN coordinator has responsibility for children with special educational needs and disadvantaged children. That role also oversees Thrive, a programme supporting social and emotional development. This gives nursery families a relevant school support role to recognise when discussing their child’s needs.
Separate admission. Attending Little Otters does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make another application through the normal Reception process; nursery attendance should never be treated as an allocation.
Reception applications use an online form, with a link sent to parents and carers in November and completion required by early January. Keep that application separate from arrangements for attending Little Otters. Familiarity with the school and the administrative decision about a Reception place are different matters.

The playgroup leader works with Little Otters on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and also runs a toddler group on Tuesday morning. These describe the leader’s responsibilities, rather than a nursery session booking pattern. Keep the distinction in mind when considering how the provision fits your family.
