Sounds and letters give Tredworth’s youngest children an early foothold in learning. The nursery caters for children aged two to four within Tredworth Infant and Nursery Academy on Victory Road, Gloucester. It is school nursery provision, with early learning forming part of the academy’s educational work.
Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the most concrete feature is the attention given to the beginnings of reading, alongside mathematics and teaching adjusted to children’s starting points.
Early reading starts with listening closely. In March 2023, nursery children were learning to distinguish sounds and read individual letters. These are small, specific steps: children begin connecting what they hear with the letters they see, rather than being expected to tackle reading all at once.
English and mathematics take a leading place from the early years onwards. In March 2023, learning in these subjects was carefully planned and ambitious. Assessment shaped the next steps, with teaching adjusted to existing knowledge. This gives children a starting point matched to their learning, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
Curriculum development. In March 2023, some subjects across the school needed clearer decisions about the knowledge pupils should acquire and its order. This was a school-wide improvement priority, rather than a finding specifically about nursery activities.
Learning support begins with understanding what children already know. In March 2023, assessment and adjustments helped match learning to individual needs, including SEND. For a family whose child needs additional support, that connection between assessment and teaching is the relevant early-years finding.
School-wide safeguarding arrangements were effective in March 2023. Staff had suitable training, concerns could be raised and recorded, and leaders sought outside advice or escalated matters when necessary. These arrangements provide the wider safeguarding framework around the nursery.
Attendance. The March 2023 school-wide findings also identified persistent absence as an improvement priority. Some pupils were missing learning; leaders needed to extend their attendance work. The finding concerned the school as a whole.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions; keep the Reception application as its own task when planning your child’s next step.
