Talk, stories and growing independence give Cecil Road’s nursery its character. For children aged 3–4 in Northfleet, this is nursery provision within Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School, with language development beginning early and swimming lessons using the school’s own pool.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 25 and 26 March 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school. Starting in Nursery, children developed independence and confidence, and could express their ideas clearly: useful foundations for taking part in learning and making themselves understood.
Language has a clear place in learning from Nursery onwards. Speaking and communication receive emphasis, helping children access learning, including those who have English as an additional language. For a parent choosing an early start in school, the practical significance is participation: being able to explain an idea and understand the language used around it.
Traditional tales, songs and rhymes bring early reading into children’s learning. In March 2025, children in early years took an enthusiastic part in these activities, and most used the essential English and mathematics skills they needed. Stories and singing give this provision a concrete character beyond a general promise of school readiness.
The school’s swimming pool adds a distinctive physical feature. Nursery children receive swimming lessons during the year, bringing an activity beyond classroom learning into their experience. Familiar routines also begin in Nursery. In March 2025, these were firmly established, giving children a consistent framework for participating in school life.
Writing skills. The March 2025 inspection identified a school-wide weakness in spelling and forming letters, affecting a small number of pupils across most year groups. This was a broader school concern, rather than a finding specifically about Nursery, but it matters when considering the next stages of learning.
Class Dojo connects parents with their child’s learning throughout the early years. Photographs shared there must stay off social media. That gives families a way to follow learning while keeping those images within their intended audience.
For additional needs, teachers work with the SENCo and inclusion team. Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning, putting support into practice and reviewing it. Adaptations can include visual prompts, shorter instructions and vocabulary introduced ahead of learning. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or contact inclusion@cecilroad.co.uk; families help agree the next steps.
Nursery school meals are charged unless the family qualifies through the specified benefits criteria. Eligibility requires an application, so families who qualify should apply through Kent’s free school meals route.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Kent County Council using the Common Application Form, meeting the local authority’s deadline. This is normally early to mid-January before the academic year when the child is eligible to start. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
The nursery offers funded places for 15 or 30 hours. Split hours are also possible, with the universal entitlement used at Cecil Road’s nursery. This gives families another arrangement to consider when dividing childcare between settings.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01474 534544 or office@cecilroad.co.uk. Applications are made directly to the school, with a birth certificate copy accompanying the form.
