Nursery at Wrotham Road Primary School

Ducklings in the morning, Cygnets in the afternoon: Wrotham Road’s nursery has two named groups and a session-based day. Each session lasts from its own start to finish, with morning and afternoon attendance following distinct timetables. That gives families a clear starting point for planning the nursery routine.
The provision belongs to Wrotham Road Primary School in Gravesend. Children are normally considered for nursery admission after their third birthday. Choosing this nursery means choosing provision within a primary school, while keeping the later Reception application as a separate decision.
Early language is the clearest feature of the learning described here. At the October 2022 inspection, children were exploring sounds in Nursery, while early-years teaching encouraged complete spoken answers and accurate word choices. These are practical foundations for learning: listening closely, expressing an idea and finding the vocabulary to explain it.
The morning group, Ducklings, attends from 8:45am to 11:45am; the afternoon group, Cygnets, attends from 12:45pm to 3:45pm. For parents, the distinction matters when arranging collection and fitting nursery around the rest of the family’s day.
Additional needs have a school support structure behind them. A learning support team works under the SENDCo, with outside professionals brought in when needed. Parents can contact the team through wrps-senco@golden-thread.org. This provides a direct route for discussing a child’s needs with the people coordinating support.
Across The Golden Thread Alliance, support can include pictures used as classroom prompts, social stories and emotional check-ins. Assessment findings inform individual plans, which are reviewed regularly with family involvement. Children receiving SEND support have opportunities to review progress towards their agreed outcomes at least three times a year.
Quiet corners and separate intervention rooms are available within the school. These provide spaces for support away from the main classroom. Their role is practical rather than decorative: room for focused help or a quieter setting when a child needs it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the 2027-2028 arrangements. Families must apply separately through their home local authority’s Common Application Form. Offers come from the local authority, so nursery attendance should never replace that application.
For the past 2026-27 entry cycle, Kent’s main application deadline was 15 January 2026. That date belongs to that intake.
In October 2022, inspectors identified weaknesses in how some early-years subjects connected with Year 1, with learning losing momentum at that change. This concern is about curriculum continuity, distinct from securing a Reception place. The trust also provides support for children who find internal transitions challenging.
Nursery application forms can be obtained from the school office. Contact Wrotham Road on 01474 534540 or email wrps-admin@golden-thread.org to make an enquiry. The two nursery sessions have different collection times, so families should plan around the timetable for their child’s group.
