Nursery at Ravenor Primary School

Snowdrop gives Ravenor’s nursery a name of its own within the school’s Foundation Stage. This is school-attached provision in Greenford, on Greenway Gardens, rather than a separate childcare setting. The nursery forms the FS1 stage of Ravenor’s organisation, giving families a distinct starting point within the primary school.
Ravenor has two nursery classes and mixed-ability grouping. Snowdrop is the FS1 class named in the staffing information. These details establish the nursery’s place within the school; they should be considered separately from the question of admission to Reception.
Counting starts with objects children can handle. In March 2023, children across Ravenor’s early years practised counting and putting together small numbers with real objects. That gives an abstract idea a concrete form: children can work with quantities rather than only reciting number words. It is a useful example of what early mathematical learning looks like here.
Reading also begins in the early years. The March 2023 inspection described reading as a priority from that stage onwards, with staff trained in the school’s agreed phonics programme. Phonics connects letters with sounds, giving children a way to begin working out words. The emphasis is on establishing those foundations early.
Together, these examples give the clearest picture of the learning approach: practical work with numbers alongside the beginnings of reading. They concern Ravenor’s early years as a whole, so they should be read as the educational context for the nursery rather than a timetable for a particular session.
An assistant head has responsibility for inclusion and also serves as the designated safeguarding lead. Bringing those responsibilities into the leadership structure gives families an identifiable role for discussions about additional needs or concerns about a child’s welfare.
A parent support adviser also holds the deputy designated safeguarding lead role. For parents, that makes family support part of the safeguarding team’s organisation. These are useful distinctions: inclusion, parent support and safeguarding each have an explicit place in the school’s staffing structure.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for the next stage are separate decisions.
Treat that distinction as part of planning ahead. A child’s nursery experience should be considered on its own merits, while the family keeps the Reception application as a separate task.
