Bug hunting in Wellie Wood, den building in a secret garden and experiments in the mud kitchen give St Kenelm’s Nursery a distinctly outdoor character. Children aged 3+ have their own building within Romsley St Kenelm's CofE Primary School, alongside access to school facilities. There is space for small-scale play and bigger physical adventures.
The nursery describes itself as small and friendly. Its approach centres on children’s interests: practitioners respond to what catches their attention, rather than directing every activity. For a child who learns by investigating, making and talking, that is an appealing starting point.
In the moment planning is the named approach here. Qualified early years practitioners develop learning from children’s ideas, using play as the starting point. The practical shape of early learning combines language, movement, number and discovery: children can pursue an interest while adults extend what they notice and understand.
A June 2024 example shows how this works. One child’s account of jellyfish seen on holiday prompted the group to make jellyfish themselves. In October 2024, pumpkin exploration included estimating and counting seeds, chopping vegetables for soup, and using hammers, golf tees and elastic bands to investigate patterns. These activities bring mathematical thinking and hand control into something children want to explore.
Outside, the mud kitchen and secret garden sit alongside Wellie Wood. Children can also use the school’s adventure trail, traversing wall and storytelling circle. Those spaces support different kinds of play, from building and balancing to sharing a story. In September 2024, a woodland listening walk encouraged children to distinguish sounds such as birds, traffic and lawnmowers.
Language runs through the day. In March 2023, nursery learning indoors and outside included Bear Hunt, songs and rhymes, giving children repeated opportunities to experiment with words. Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised is the school’s phonics programme, with daily nursery phonics lessons alongside the play-based approach.
The team includes a nursery lead keyworker and a nursery keyworker. Parents receive photographs and comments about their child’s development through an online learning journal and can contribute their own updates. That gives families a way to connect home experiences with nursery learning.
Before starting, families complete registration paperwork covering collection permissions, medication and intimate care. Cool Milk registration and Tapestry consent are also included. St Kenelm’s operates a nut-free rule because children in the nursery and school have severe nut allergies, making food brought from home a matter for careful attention.
Breakfast is included with Breakfast Club, while after-school care provides food through Cupcakes Early Years Catering Ltd. These are charged additions to the nursery day. For SEND discussions, parents can arrange an appointment with the school’s Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator through the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families apply separately through Worcestershire County Council’s online School Admissions portal; the application deadline is January before the year of entry. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to stand on the nursery experience itself.
Shared activities can help children become familiar with the school. In June 2024, nursery children joined Reception for yoga. Transition days involving nursery were scheduled for 9 and 14 July 2026. These opportunities for familiarity are separate from the allocation of Reception places.
Core nursery hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm, with provision running for 38 weeks on a term-time basis. Wraparound places for nursery children are limited, so availability matters when planning a longer day. Wraparound sessions are booked through Arbor. Parents provide a password for authorised adults collecting their child in their absence.
