At a Glance

An outdoor classroom used in every weather and phonics that starts with listening give Edgar Sewter’s nursery its character. Children join from the term following their third birthday, with a qualified teacher leading their learning. This is the school’s own nursery in Halesworth, within an early years department that also includes two Reception classes.

At the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 July 2024, early years provision was graded Good. Positive attitudes to learning were evident among nursery children, giving families a dated assessment of how children approached their activities.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult teaching share the day. Children learn individually and in small groups, alongside class and larger group activities. Continuous provision means resources and learning opportunities remain part of everyday activity, so children can return to skills rather than encounter them only in a single lesson. Accessible resources encourage them to make choices for themselves.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), guided here by Development Matters, combines language, physical development and social and emotional learning with mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning to communicate and manage relationships sits alongside the beginnings of reading, writing and number work. Topics draw on children’s interests, giving that learning a playful context.

Twinkl Phonics begins in nursery at Level 1. Children distinguish sounds from their surroundings and instruments, develop speaking and listening, and work towards breaking spoken words into sounds and putting those sounds together. Letter formation also starts in nursery. These are foundations for later reading and writing.

Outside, the designated classroom allows learning on a bigger scale than indoors. It is used whatever the weather. The early years children also have their own outdoor play areas, with supervision during busy periods such as lunchtime. Outdoor learning is part of the routine, so suitable clothing matters every day.

Care and Support

Settling is approached with families rather than through a single fixed arrangement. Transition events can be adapted, with alternatives offered to suit individual children. That flexibility gives families a way to shape the move from home into nursery around their child’s needs.

Each child has a Google learning folder that families and staff can contribute to. It brings learning at home and school together and helps adults plan the next steps. Across the school, SENCOs work with teachers and act as contacts for parents; the pastoral team also supports families and children experiencing difficulties. These are school-wide support structures rather than a separate nursery service.

For food, school lunches are cooked on site. Options include vegetarian or meat hot meals, filled jacket potatoes with salad, and Pick and Mix; packed lunches are also permitted. Staff help children with eating and meal choices. Nursery children may bring a healthy snack, such as vegetables, fruit, cheese or crackers. Nuts are prohibited, and chocolate treats are excluded from snacks.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to Suffolk County Council through the normal Reception admissions process. Treat that application as a distinct task when planning your child’s next stage.

Familiarity is useful for transition, but it is separate from admission. Nursery and Reception teams work closely together, and adults across the department know the children. Combined with transition events that can be adjusted for individuals, this provides continuity in relationships as children prepare to move on.
