At a Glance

Three-hour sessions or longer nursery days give Beech Hill families a choice of routines from age two. The nursery serves two-year-olds alongside children aged three and four, within Beech Hill School on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Halifax. Its accommodation is on the ground floor. This is term-time provision, so holiday childcare needs a separate plan.

Learning through practical activity gives the early years its character. In February 2025, children developed hand control through drawing and shaping play dough, with staff helping them extend their skills. Those small movements matter for handling tools and beginning to write.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning with children's development: talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions sit alongside early reading, number, creativity and discovering the world. Beech Hill uses Development Matters to help plan this learning. The emphasis is on building skills together rather than treating each area as an isolated lesson.

During the February 2025 inspection, early years children practised making marks in a drawing area. In February 2025, making a gingerbread figure from dough was another example of learning through hands-on activity. Adults structured activities and contributed teaching that helped children develop their skills. Early years children also made regular library visits, bringing books into their experiences beyond the classroom.

Themes give nursery learning a recognisable focus. During 2024-25, these included Magnificent Me, Teddy Bears’ Picnic and Wiggle and Grow. These were nursery topics, rather than a timetable for the current year.

Care and Support

Home visits by nursery staff help establish contact before children start. Across the early years, families can communicate through Seesaw, telephone calls and conversations with staff. Nursery practitioners and teaching assistants have first-aid training; when first aid is given, an accident record is completed and a copy goes home. That gives parents a concrete account of what happened.

Fruit, toast, milk and water are accessible at a snack station supervised by staff. Children also take part daily in the NHS toothbrushing scheme. For longer nursery days, families can choose a school dinner or send a packed lunch. Parents supply nappies, wipes, nappy bags and sun cream.

Support for additional needs includes an EYFS SENDCo, with appointments arranged through the office. EYFS staff have Dingley’s Promise training, and Chatterbox is an early years intervention for communication. Children on the SEND register have individual education plans, with parents invited to termly reviews. These meetings give families a regular opportunity to discuss targets and support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority in the school's Reception allocation criteria. Families must make a separate application through the normal local-authority process, meeting its application deadline. Calderdale residents apply through the council's online admissions portal; a local-authority preference form is another application route.

Preparation for the move is a separate matter. Children can visit before starting, receive a booklet showing their new classroom and teachers, and have a staggered start. Staff exchange information with the child's existing setting. Familiarity can help with the change, but it does not alter admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Morning attendance runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The 15-hour pattern consists of five mornings or five afternoons, Monday to Friday. For three- and four-year-olds, entitlement begins in the term after their third birthday; funded places for two-year-olds depend on eligibility.

Eligible families using 30 hours can choose full-time attendance, 8:45am to 3:15pm Monday to Friday, with Friday's final two and a half hours charged separately. Alternatively, the 30-hours-only pattern finishes at 12:45pm on Friday, with the same longer days Monday to Thursday. School dinners carry a charge unless families provide a packed lunch. Contact the school for current charges.

Collect a nursery application form from the school office. Extra sessions depend on space and staffing, require advance payment each half term, and need one month's notice to cancel. Holiday cover. Nursery closes during school holidays, so these attendance patterns suit families who can arrange care outside term time.
