A shared early-years playground and a focus on helping children find their words give Moorside’s nursery its character. This is nursery provision within Moorside Community Primary School in Halifax, with 26 places for the first part of the week and another 26 for the second. Places covering 30 hours are also offered. Families can therefore choose between attendance concentrated at either end of the week and a longer weekly pattern.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 2 and 3 February 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Longer days are combined with a shorter Wednesday session in each half-week pattern. This gives children two full days together, followed or preceded by a morning or afternoon, rather than the same short session each day. The Wednesday changeover matters when arranging family routines.
The nursery belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In February 2023, learning in early years emphasised building children’s vocabulary and helping them express themselves clearly. For parents, the practical focus is on children developing the words they need to communicate.
Outdoor learning has a specific space: the early-years playground serves both nursery and Reception. The school uses its outdoor areas for curriculum activities as well as play. Its purpose-built premises also include a sensory room and a room for family learning, placing the nursery within a school with spaces beyond the classroom.
Family involvement begins early. In February 2023, home visits and introductory meetings were part of early-years parental engagement, alongside opportunities to play together and take part in family learning. These offer different ways to become involved in a child’s learning, including contact at home and time together in the setting. Relationships between adults and children in early years were positive at that inspection.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the Derbyshire Tracker is used in nursery to follow development. Smaller steps receive additional attention when children are working below expectations for their age. This matters where progress might otherwise be harder to capture.
Children receiving SEND support have a Pupil Passport recording their individual targets and additional provision. For those on SEN Support, it is reviewed each term with parents’ views included. The school maintains links with Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years Teacher Support Service. Disabled toilets and wheelchair access are further practical features for families considering accessibility.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year. Calderdale Admissions Office administers Reception admissions; the school directs families to Calderdale’s school admissions service for the application route.
The playground shared by nursery and Reception provides a familiar physical space. It should be considered separately from the allocation of a school place.
The first half-week pattern runs on Monday and Tuesday, 08:40 to 15:10, then Wednesday, 08:40 to 11:20. The second begins on Wednesday, 12:30 to 15:10, followed by Thursday and Friday, 08:40 to 15:10. Match the Wednesday session carefully to work and collection arrangements.
Visits can be arranged through the school office. Call 01422 365236 to make an appointment; the school is on Keighley Road, Halifax, HX2 8AP.
A May 2026 consultation proposed daily PE uniform for EYFS children to make active play and changing for toileting easier. Treat that as a proposal when planning clothing purchases.
There are 26 places for Monday to Wednesday lunchtime and 26 for Wednesday lunchtime to Friday. Places covering 30 hours are also available.
Monday and Tuesday run from 08:40 to 15:10, with Wednesday morning from 08:40 to 11:20. The second pattern starts on Wednesday from 12:30 to 15:10, followed by Thursday and Friday from 08:40 to 15:10.
