Learning to take turns and treat other children kindly gives Parkinson Lane’s early years provision a clear starting point. These are practical lessons for young children learning to share their day with others, alongside the knowledge that prepares them for later learning.
The nursery belongs to Parkinson Lane Community Primary School in Halifax and serves children aged three to four. In September 2023, 69 children attended; that is an attendance figure for that inspection, rather than a statement of current capacity. Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 20 and 21 September 2023. This judgement covers early years within the school.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sits within the school’s curriculum. Foundational knowledge receives explicit attention: subject leaders work with teaching staff to check that children acquire the knowledge needed for subsequent learning. For parents, the useful distinction is that early learning has a purpose beyond the immediate activity. It prepares children to build on what they already know.
Social learning is part of that foundation too. In September 2023, children in early years were learning consideration for others and how to wait for their turn. Sharing an activity therefore carries a learning purpose of its own. The emphasis gives families a concrete picture of the expectations children begin to practise, rather than treating conduct as something that matters only once they are older.
Kindness and respect shape the early years expectations. Learning to take turns means practising how to make room for another child; learning kindness concerns how children treat one another. These are relevant foundations for participating in a group and developing relationships with peers.
Parents have a role in the school’s approach as co-educators. Its stated partnership encourages families to explore places together, talk with children and invite their questions. That gives parents a practical way to connect home experiences with learning: a conversation or a shared outing can become an opportunity to notice something and ask about it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The early years emphasis on foundational knowledge concerns preparation for later learning. It should not be read as an admissions advantage. Educational preparation and the allocation of a school place are separate matters.
