A Nursery Nativity and Orchestral Explorers workshops give a concrete glimpse of the youngest children’s place in St Dominic’s Catholic school life. Both were scheduled for December 2025, with Nursery included in the musical workshops alongside older classes. These are examples of shared school experiences, rather than a description of the everyday timetable.
The nursery belongs to St Dominic Catholic Primary School on Southdown Road in Harpenden. The school aims to help children understand their faith and develop their individual potential, working with families and the parish community. For parents, that makes the Catholic character part of the choice from the beginning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together. Its seven areas cover movement, communication and emotional development alongside early maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent language, learning includes how a child talks, plays, manages feelings and uses their body, as well as early encounters with reading and numbers.
Development Matters describes development in broad age bands, recognising that children progress differently. Playing and exploring, persistence, and developing ideas are its three characteristics of learning. The useful implication is that trying again and working something out matter alongside completing an activity.
Music supplies a specific example of nursery enrichment here: Orchestral Explorers workshops were planned for December 2025. Participation required parental consent and payment through Arbor. Families should distinguish occasional activities like these from the regular session routine.
Preparation for starting school centres on practical independence. St Dominic encourages families to practise dressing, eating and toileting, and to give children opportunities to spend time with other adults and children. Talking about worries and explaining that parents will return gives families a concrete way to prepare for separation.
Parents are encouraged to share what they know about their child so that the school can respond to individual needs. For questions about progress or behaviour, the class teacher is the first contact. Additional learning needs can be discussed with the SEN Co-ordinator, providing a separate route for concerns about SEND or English as an additional language.
Food rules are specific: St Dominic is nut free, and food brought in must exclude nuts and nut-based products. Break-time snacks must be fresh vegetables or fruit. This gives parents a clear rule when packing food.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; Hertfordshire’s school admissions service is the route signposted to parents. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate tasks.
School-start preparation also encourages families to discuss school positively, look at pictures together and practise unfamiliar skills. These are practical ways to build familiarity. They do not establish an admissions advantage.
Admissions enquiries go to admissions@stdominic.herts.sch.uk or the school office on 01582 760047. General enquiries can also be sent to admin@stdominic.herts.sch.uk.
For a longer conversation with a teacher, arrange an appointment through the admin email. That gives families a practical route for discussing concerns in more depth than a brief exchange after school.
