Nursery at Wood End School

Choosing when to have a snack is a small act of independence, but it captures something distinctive about Wood End’s early years: children learn to make decisions for themselves. The nursery belongs to Wood End School on Yeomans Avenue in Harpenden, with morning, afternoon and full-day options.
For the September 2026 intake, the eligible birth dates were 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Both morning and afternoon sessions follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, the emphasis includes building knowledge and vocabulary from early years onwards, alongside learning to manage everyday choices. The school aims for children allocated either session to have equivalent learning opportunities, so a morning preference does not mean a different curriculum entitlement.
At the November 2023 inspection, independence was evident in shared snack and drink breaks that children timed themselves. They also soon knew what adults expected and joined eagerly in the activities arranged for them. These everyday decisions give children practice in managing themselves, as well as joining in with others.
Outdoor learning has a regular place in the day. Early years has its own outdoor space, accessible daily, giving children somewhere beyond the classroom to spend time. Parents can also take part in classroom Stay and Play appointments: hour-long nursery sessions are scheduled for 9 to 13 November 2026. That offers a practical opportunity to share part of the nursery experience.
Settling begins before the first session. Staff arrange to meet children at their existing setting, or at home if they do not attend one; a nursery taster is an alternative. Meeting in familiar surroundings gives staff a starting point for understanding the child. Each EYFS child is assigned a key person. Parents can book a meeting with staff through the school office at any time, giving families a route to discuss concerns between scheduled consultations.
Food arrangements depend on the attendance pattern. Children staying for a full day bring a packed lunch. Breakfast club includes a light breakfast, making it a separate option for families needing an earlier start.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the class teacher is the first contact, with a SENDCo meeting available for further advice. Support follows a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, with parents involved throughout. The school site has two single-storey buildings, wheelchair access and disabled toilets in both, practical features for children with mobility needs.
Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the school’s six admission rules. Families must apply again through Hertfordshire’s normal school admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Allocation uses criteria including siblings, medical or social needs and distance, rather than nursery attendance.
Transition support is a separate matter. Preparations include meetings with parents, additional visits where necessary and, for some children, photo booklets showing staff and classrooms. A staggered start splits the class across the first two days in September, allowing children to become familiar with their new setting in smaller groups.
Full days run from 8.45am to 3.30pm. Families express a morning or afternoon preference when applying, and the school makes the allocation after discussion with nursery staff. Both sessions operate within the stated practitioner ratio of 1:13.
The funding arrangement combines an existing 15-hour early education place with another 15 hours for eligible working parents of three- and four-year-olds. Hours beyond the 30-hour entitlement are charged; contact the school for current charges. Eligible parents apply through HMRC and supply their code on the nursery application.
Breakfast club runs from 7.45am to 8.45am. Jousters also offers nursery after-school places, booked directly with the club. Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01582 761636 or admin@woodend.herts.sch.uk.
