Nursery at Bodriggy Academy

Play, outdoor exploration and a teacher-led setting give Bodriggy Academy’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own provision in Hayle, with funded places for three- and four-year-olds and an early years team. The nursery aims to help children become independent and confident through playing and learning together.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 October 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Adult-guided activities sit alongside play that children initiate themselves. Exploring, investigating, making things and talking are treated as ways to learn, giving children room to follow their interests as well as take part in activities led by adults. The outdoor space is extensive, with nature exploration a focus. That gives curiosity a practical outlet.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) puts relationships, movement and communication first here. In parent language, that means developing confidence with other children, learning to express ideas and building physical skills. Literacy and mathematics sit alongside creative expression and understanding the world. Bodriggy prioritises the first three areas as foundations for further learning.
Stories and rhymes are part of nursery life. In October 2023, nursery children enjoyed listening to both, while children across early years cooperated in play and practised taking turns. Mathematics teaching began in early years too, using resources and clear explanations to develop understanding. These are useful foundations for joining in with a group and beginning to make sense of mathematical ideas.
Settling begins before the first session. A home visit is offered, and children are invited to try a taster session before starting. Induction can be adapted to the child’s readiness, so the move into nursery can happen at a pace suited to them.
For younger families, free Stay and Play sessions for two-year-olds run during term time on Wednesdays, 1.30–3.00pm. Parents attend with their child, giving both a chance to become familiar with the adults and learning environment before nursery begins.
Tapestry learning journals provide an online connection with home, alongside email, telephone contact and a school newsletter each Friday. At lunchtime, children can have a packed lunch or a booked school dinner. That gives families a choice between food from home and a school meal.
Wellbeing concerns go first to the class teacher or teaching assistant. The school’s wider support structure includes a Child and Family Lead and SENCo, with links to external professionals where needed. This gives parents a clear first contact and a route to further support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Cornwall Council’s Primary Admissions Department using the online admissions route. The application window runs between October and January before the child’s statutory school starting date.
Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions. Becoming familiar with Bodriggy through nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
Two sessions shape the nursery day: mornings run from 8.45am to 11.45am, and afternoons from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Nursery children can also use Breakfast Club, 7.45–8.45am, with staff taking them on to nursery. After School Club runs from 3.15pm to 5.45pm. These extensions can help families fit nursery around work.
Funded places begin in September, January or April after a child’s third birthday, according to the birthday cut-off. The funding arrangement described for three- and four-year-olds is a maximum of 15 hours each week across 38 weeks; eligible working parents may receive a maximum of 30 hours each week across 38 weeks. Ask the school for current charges.
