Nursery at Penpol School

A millpond adventure and a visit from a veterinary nurse give Penpol’s nursery a character of its own. This is provision for three and four year olds within Penpol School in Hayle, with a nursery teacher alongside the school’s wider early years and support structure. The nursery says it welcomes families of different backgrounds and takes account of disability, additional needs and children learning English as an additional language.
Ofsted’s recorded nursery judgement is Outstanding, while the whole-school outcome is Not judged. These are distinct judgements.
Morning and afternoon sessions form the nursery’s booking pattern. Penpol aims to accommodate parents’ preferences while protecting continuity for children and keeping room for new starters. That makes the pattern of attendance a consideration alongside the individual session chosen.
Children’s experiences include a nursery outing to the millpond and a veterinary nurse visiting the nursery. These concrete examples bring a local place and an animal-care profession into children’s experience. They give parents a more specific picture of activities than a general promise of exploration.
Support sits within a school structure that includes a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO). Parents can arrange an appointment through the office to discuss additional help. For a family with concerns about their child’s development, that provides a direct starting point for a conversation.
Penpol aims to involve parents throughout planning for additional needs. Its school-wide arrangements include meetings with parents and the SENDCO to review targets, alongside liaison with speech and language therapists and educational psychology services. The distinction matters: these are school support arrangements, rather than a description of an individual nursery child’s provision.
Bereavement support also extends to children and families. Trained staff work with Penhaligon’s Friends, and the school has a memory garden. Families can contact the wellbeing team at tis@penpol.cornwall.sch.uk or seek bereavement support at bc@penpol.cornwall.sch.uk.
Attending Penpol’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, coordinated by Cornwall Council, and meet the deadline for their entry year. Choose nursery attendance for the experience itself, while treating the Reception application as a separate task.
In 2023-24, transition arrangements included a weekly Preschool Club, visits by Reception teachers to preschool and summer transition days at school. Those activities introduced children to the next stage; they did not establish an admissions advantage.

Session changes. Penpol asks families to request changes at least two terms ahead wherever possible. This calls for advance planning if working patterns are likely to change.
Information for families can be provided verbally as well as in writing, with translated written material where required. That gives parents another way to understand arrangements before making decisions about attendance.
