Learning indoors and outdoors gives Little Punnetts its clearest character. Punnetts Town runs the nursery on its Battle Road site in Heathfield, accepting children aged two. It offers an early start within the primary school community.
At the Ofsted inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery sits within Punnetts Town Community Primary School, which belongs to the Woodlands federation alongside Dallington.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together. Communication, movement and emotional development provide the foundations, with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world building on them. For parents, this means looking beyond early reading alone: developing relationships and physical skills also belongs within the learning programme.
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces supported the early years curriculum in October 2024. Both contributed across the learning areas, giving children opportunities to develop their understanding in different environments. Learning about the past, for example, began within early years rather than waiting until later schooling.
Respect for difference also starts in the Nursery Year. Children begin learning the values that shape the wider school community, making social development part of their education from the outset. This gives the nursery’s work a purpose beyond preparation for classroom tasks: children are also beginning to understand how to live and learn alongside others.
A SENDCO and inclusion manager provides a contact for families discussing additional needs. The school’s SEND resources include its Intimate Care Policy, Accessibility Policy & Plan and Supporting Children with Medical Conditions Policy. These give families specific documents to consult when considering care or access needs.
Safeguarding has a designated lead and a deputy lead, with concerns directed to that team. Families therefore have an identified route for raising a child protection concern through the school, rather than relying solely on general enquiries.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its normal deadline. Punnetts Town follows East Sussex admission criteria and directs families to East Sussex for the application procedures. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
In October 2024, children were well prepared for the move into Reception. That is an educational finding about readiness, not an entitlement to admission.
The school office handles nursery availability enquiries and can arrange a visit. Contact 01435 830361 or office@punnettstown.e-sussex.sch.uk. A visit offers families a direct way to explore Little Punnetts before deciding whether to apply.
