Morning and afternoon sessions give Hebburn Lakes nursery a distinct rhythm within the primary school on Campbell Park Road in Hebburn. Children can start in the term following their third birthday, subject to a place being available. This is the school's own nursery provision, with an Early Years and KS1 leadership role connecting the youngest children to the wider staff team.
Learning combines time with adults and opportunities to put ideas into practice. In May 2023, Ofsted found that teaching in the early years built children's understanding of mathematics, with nursery activities allowing them to revisit what they had learned. The useful distinction for parents is between being introduced to an idea and having opportunities to use it. Both featured here.
Routines also receive direct attention. At that inspection, early years children paid attention during teaching led by adults and collaborated with one another as they practised. Staff explicitly taught the habits and expectations of school, helping children participate in learning and get along with others. Praise and the school's reward system supported this work. Learning how to join in was part of the education, alongside mathematical understanding.
Additional needs have a route into support from the early years. The SEND coordinator, class teachers and Early Years lead use the Local Authority RANGE document to identify needs and start support pathways. For families, this provides a shared process for recognising a difficulty and deciding what should happen next.
Parents are involved in referral work alongside teaching and support staff. Depending on the need, routes include Speech and Language Therapy, the Educational Psychology Service, and Portage and Pre-school Service. The school also handles paperwork for Education, Health and Care Plans and their annual reviews. These are distinct support routes, so the appropriate response depends on the child's needs.
The school aims to involve parents in decisions, progress assessments and goals. Its SEND coordinator and assistant head meet each class teacher termly to discuss children's needs and progress, giving support a recurring review point. Records for children with additional needs are maintained to support changes of class or school. That continuity matters when a young child moves between staff teams.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through South Tyneside Council, following the normal Reception application timetable. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
For children with additional needs, maintaining their support records forms part of preparation for transitions. This concerns continuity of care and support; it does not secure admission.
Morning nursery drop-off is at 8.30am; afternoon drop-off is at 12.30pm. The application form can be obtained from the school office, and applications are accepted from age 2. Starting remains dependent on available places in the term after the child's third birthday.
