Signing, picture exchange and sensory stories give the early years at Keelman's Way their distinctive character. Communication is the central thread: children have ways to express a choice that suit their needs, rather than relying on speech alone.
The nursery belongs to Keelman's Way School on Campbell Park Road in Hebburn. The wider school serves pupils aged 2 to 19 and describes its work as combining education with therapeutic support. Most pupils have severe learning difficulties, and many have complex or profound needs. That specialist context matters when considering the nursery's place within the school.
In April 2024, the early years and semi-formal pathways emphasised communication adapted to individual pupils. Signing and exchanging pictures supported choice-making. For a child developing communication, the practical value is being able to take part and express a preference through a suitable method.
Sensory storytelling, familiar songs and interaction with adults were part of these pathways. Mathematics included searching for three-dimensional shapes, turning an abstract idea into something pupils could find. These examples show learning through participation: listening, responding, exploring and making choices are woven into activities.
The school grounds include wildlife and sensory gardens, alongside an allotment and greenhouse. These are school facilities, giving the nursery a setting with physical spaces beyond classrooms.
Teaching consistency. In April 2024, school-wide concerns included uneven use of agreed teaching approaches and too little phonics teaching and practice for pupils able to access it. Families should distinguish those wider concerns from the specific communication activities described in the early years.
Partnership with families is an explicit school aim. Keelman's Way says it values relationships with parents and carers so that staff and families can work together around a child's needs. It also works closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, placing the nursery within a wider educational and therapeutic setting.
Choice-making has a care dimension too. A picture exchange or sign gives a child another way to communicate with an adult. The emphasis on methods suited to the individual is relevant to parents considering how their child will participate in daily activities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal process and meet the applicable deadline; a nursery place should not be treated as a promise of the next placement.
Keep that distinction clear when planning ahead. Familiarity with a school and its communication approaches is a different matter from an entitlement to admission. The nursery decision and the Reception application need separate attention.
The early years and primary timetable dated May 2021 ran from 8.30am to 3.00pm. Treat those as historical hours when planning childcare and journeys. Nursery lunchtime was 11.45am in the school-day arrangements.
School uniform includes a pale blue or white polo shirt or T-shirt, a navy cardigan, jumper or sweatshirt, and dark grey or black bottoms. Flat shoes or trainers are specified. Logo clothing can be ordered from Initial Images in South Shields, while other retailers can also supply uniform.
