Colour mixing, rhymes and outdoor investigations give Heckmondwike Primary Academy’s nursery its character. Children explore materials, share books with adults and use music throughout their sessions. The provision belongs to the primary academy on Cawley Lane in Heckmondwike.
A nursery teacher, nursery nurse and teaching assistant make up the nursery team, with an EYFS leader within the wider academy structure. These are distinct teaching and support roles. Heckmondwike Primary Academy has no Ofsted graded rating yet.
Read Write Inc begins with books shared by children and adults, followed by pictures associated with Set 1 sounds. Letter and sound links are introduced in the third term. This gives parents a concrete picture of the nursery’s early reading sequence: stories and vocabulary come before that later introduction to letter sounds.
Music punctuates the session. Rhyme and rhythm are used for listening and concentration, while music also accompanies routines and provides a way to calm down. Creative work includes experimenting with colour combinations and texture. Children can explore how changing a material changes what they make.
The purpose-built outdoor area is used daily in early years, alongside weekly PE and daily activities focused on fine motor movement. Children practise climbing, balancing and moving around one another. Nursery science also uses the outdoor space to explore changes in nature. Sorting objects and testing simple predictions introduce investigation through practical activity.
Inside the classroom, nursery children explore tablets, mobile phones and interactive screens through activities led by adults and opportunities within their everyday provision. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) work also includes mathematical play involving number, shape, measurement and space. The academy aims for children to discuss mathematical discoveries as they play, connecting practical exploration with conversation.
For children with additional needs, the academy works with the Early Years SEN Team and Educational Psychology Team. The SEND coordinator meets an educational psychologist each term to discuss children who may need help. Speech and Language, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are among the specialist services the school works with.
Support can involve an Individual Support Plan, followed where appropriate by a My Support Plan. More complex or multiple needs may lead to an application for an Education Health Care Plan. Parents with concerns are directed first to their child’s class teacher, giving families a clear starting point for discussing support.
The academy’s meal arrangements include school dinners, food brought from home and going home for lunch. Packed lunches are eaten under supervision in the School Hall. Families managing an allergy or particular dietary need can meet the kitchen manager to discuss meals. These are academy arrangements; nursery session times should be considered separately when planning the day.
Safety concerns can be raised with any member of staff parents feel comfortable approaching. The academy safeguarding team can also be contacted at DSL@heckmondwikepa.org.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, rather than assuming a nursery place carries forward.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon session is 12.30pm to 3.30pm. These nursery hours differ from the wider academy day, so use the session times when organising collection and childcare.
Nursery uniform includes a royal blue sweatshirt, cardigan or V-neck jumper, with black trousers or a skirt and a white shirt, blouse or polo shirt. A logo is optional. Clothing and equipment should be labelled so lost items can be returned.
