Nursery at Halwin School

Curiosity shapes the early years approach at Halwin: children’s interests influence learning alongside seasonal themes and planned topics. This is nursery provision within a rural primary school in Porkellis, near Helston, rather than a separate setting. Halwin belongs to Crofty Education Trust.
Robins brings together EYFS and Key Stage 1. That mixed-age organisation is a useful consideration for families choosing a school-based start: early years belongs within the school’s wider classroom structure.
Adult-guided activities sit alongside play chosen by children and learning opportunities they can return to independently. Termly topics introduce fresh experiences, while smaller topics respond to interests as they emerge. Seasons, celebrations and key texts help shape activities. The balance gives children both a starting point supplied by adults and room to pursue their own ideas.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with Development Matters also used to guide teaching. In parent language, the approach combines early communication, physical development and relationships with foundations in number, literacy and creative expression. Halwin aims to develop children who communicate confidently, ask questions and form kind friendships. Exploring, persevering and solving problems are central to that aim.
Books have a concrete place in the day. Pre-school children explore sounds through play and revisit books; in Robins, daily stories are accompanied by songs and rhymes to support vocabulary and understanding. This gives early reading a starting point in listening and enjoyment. The school also uses its outdoor space for exploration, learning and play.
The early years team includes a teacher who also holds responsibility for EYFS and RWI phonics, alongside a deputy safeguarding role. A teaching assistant supports learning in Robins and has reading tutor and speech and language champion responsibilities. Those roles connect classroom learning with language support.
For children needing additional help, Halwin’s school-wide SEND arrangements use Star Plans to bring targets and support together. Parents take part in reviews at least three times each year, giving families regular opportunities to discuss progress and changes to provision. Support can include smaller groups, practical resources or specialist involvement, according to individual needs.
Medical needs have a separate planning route. Individual Healthcare Plans are developed with parents and health professionals, then reviewed annually or sooner when needs change. Intimate care must be recorded and carried out by trained staff with DBS clearance, with children’s privacy respected.
Attending Halwin’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Reception admission requires a separate application through the normal admissions process; Cornwall Council coordinates applications locally. Families should apply between September and January in the school year their child turns four, meeting the council’s deadline for that application round.
Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a separate placement process. For families considering delayed entry, an application must still be made at the normal time. Agreement to delay does not reserve a place for the following year, so this decision needs to be considered separately from choosing the nursery.
