Nursery at Parc Eglos School

At a Glance

Choosing when to move outdoors, practising putting on a coat and playing daily listening games give Parc Eglos Nursery its character: children have decisions to make as well as skills to learn. The provision includes two- and three-year-olds and forms part of Parc Eglos School on Church Hill in Helston.

A nursery manager, room leader, teaching assistants and nursery teacher make up the team. The manager holds a Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning; the room leader has a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Early Years. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 18 and 19 June 2024. That judgement covers early years across the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play gives adults the starting point for planning. Staff watch what interests each child and use those observations to decide the next steps. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together physical development, communication and emotional and social skills with early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, this means learning extends beyond letters and numbers to expressing needs, managing feelings and doing things independently.

Children choose activities and resources, and can decide when to switch between outdoor and indoor spaces. Getting dressed, using the toilet and putting on outdoor clothes are also part of learning. Adults guide this practice at the child's own pace, making everyday care routines opportunities to build independence.

Speaking and listening receive daily attention through games and activities. BBC's Tiny Happy People is among the resources used, and staff have training in TalkBoost and work with Crofty's Speech & Language team. For Starfish, the nursery plans to introduce Read Write Inc. from the summer term. Nursery maths includes songs, games and objects children can handle, with counting, quantity and patterns as the focus.

In June 2024, children across early years were developing foundational skills successfully. Adults used questions and guidance to extend children's thinking, with topic vocabulary receiving close attention. This gives the language emphasis a clear educational purpose: helping children explain and explore their ideas.

Care and Support

A key person gets to know the child's development, circumstances and individual needs. Support with sharing, taking turns and disagreements focuses on helping children understand their feelings and actions. When a child becomes distressed, their key person can accompany them to a quiet area for up to 5 minutes to help them settle. Parents join discussions when behaviour remains a concern, so support takes account of home as well as nursery life.

The nursery has its own SENCO within the wider school support structure. Star Plans organise additional support through assessment, planning, action and review, with parent reviews at least three times a year. These provide specific opportunities to discuss targets and progress.

Wider school concerns. In June 2024, some SEND targets across the school needed greater precision, and some parents found communication unclear. Safeguarding was effective overall, although recording needed greater detail; concerns identified during the visit were addressed before it ended. These were school findings, rather than findings confined to nursery, but they make communication and individual support useful topics for families to discuss.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, with Cornwall Council coordinating Reception admissions locally. The normal application period runs from September to January in the school year the child turns four; families should follow the council's deadline for their application round.

For 2026/27, nursery attendance gives no Reception priority under the allocation criteria. Choosing this nursery and obtaining a school place remain separate decisions. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan use a separate placement process.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go through the main school office on 01326 572998 or by email to parceglossecretary@croftymat.org. School visits can be arranged through the office. For questions about additional needs, the SEND team can be contacted at parceglossend@croftymat.org.
