At a Glance

Weekly Forest School and short bursts of phonics and maths give Unicorn Class its character: play has room to breathe, with focused teaching woven through the day. Nettlebed Pre-School is led by a teacher and became part of Nettlebed Community School in 2022. Children join from the term of their third birthday, attending for at least 15 hours each week.

There are 24 places in each session. This is the school's own nursery class, participating in school experiences rather than operating separately from school life. For families wanting an introduction to that wider community, the connection is practical and immediate.

The Nursery Day

Learning moves between brief teaching sessions and play. Phonics and maths receive focused, age-appropriate attention, then children revisit that learning through play in the classroom. The arrangement gives them opportunities to practise beyond the taught activity, rather than leaving letters and numbers confined to a lesson.

Class topics also have their own short sessions, with children's interests helping to shape them. The early years curriculum works towards the Early Learning Goals: here, focused teaching and opportunities to apply learning through play sit alongside each other. A teacher leads the class, so the nursery day combines play with planned teaching.

Forest School takes place weekly, adding a regular outdoor element to the classroom routine. Within the room, play opportunities reinforce the phonics and maths teaching. The balance is the useful detail: outdoor learning recurs each week, while classroom learning returns throughout the day.

Care and Support

Food fits into the session pattern. Children have lunch during the morning session, and each session includes a snack, with crackers or fruit given as examples. That lunchtime arrangement matters when choosing between mornings and afternoons.

Before starting, new children are encouraged to visit. The school's arrangements for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) include discussion with parents, information from their previous setting and contact with outside agencies to prepare for their start.

Support is planned with families. Parents are contacted when a possible special educational need raises concern, and agreed outcomes are reviewed through termly meetings and parent evenings. Teaching assistants receive training for the needs of the children they support. Specialist services include Educational Psychology and SENSS, with parental discussion preceding their involvement.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; Oxfordshire County Council administers the school's admissions centrally. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

For children with SEND, the school prepares for the next educational stage through liaison with families, staff and the receiving setting, passing on SEND information. This supports continuity of care and learning; it does not secure an admission place.

Practical Information

Choose a morning session from 9am to noon, an afternoon from noon to 3pm, or the full day from 9am to 3pm. Hours may be privately paid or government funded. Families using their full 30-hour allocation can attend the daily full-day pattern.

Chargeable extensions run from 8.45am to 3.30pm, while nursery children can access wraparound care covering 7.45am to 4.30pm. These options give families different lengths of day. Contact the school for current charges.

Show rounds can be requested throughout the year. Call 01491 641328 or email office.2504@nettlebed.oxon.sch.uk to arrange a nursery visit.
