Nursery at Broadlands Primary School

Speech, language and the first steps in reading give Broadlands’ early years provision its clearest character. Nursery forms part of Broadlands Primary School on Broadlands Lane in Hereford, so this is a school nursery with support organised within the wider school.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 October 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Early reading has a deliberate sequence. In October 2022, children in early years began a structured phonics programme, learning how written letters relate to sounds. The order matters: each step gives children something to build on as they begin reading.
Adults checked individual learning and helped children who were in danger of slipping behind. This makes the reading work more than a shared activity: individual understanding determines when extra help is needed.
Concentration and behaviour were also strengths in October 2022. Children in early years sustained their attention during lessons and acted responsibly. For parents, that gives a concrete picture of children taking part in learning alongside others.
Support for communication starts early. In October 2022, staff worked on speech and language with children in early years as part of the school’s support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This is a useful focus for families whose child needs help expressing themselves.
Broadlands aims to include children throughout school life and adapt teaching to their needs. Extra help may be different from the support other children receive, or added to it. Children and families receive updates on progress, giving parents a part in understanding how support is working.
A SENDCo and deputy SENDCo provide a contact route through the school office. Families can use that route to discuss their child’s additional needs with the relevant team.
Attending Broadlands’ nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes: families must apply again through the normal Reception application route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as two separate decisions.
The school office handles enquiries on 01432 266772 or at BroadlandsAdmin@broadlands.hereford.sch.uk. Queries are passed to the appropriate staff member, which gives families one starting point for contact.
Office staffing runs from 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday, and from 8.00am to 3.30pm on Friday. These are office hours, useful for planning a call.
School visits can be arranged by appointment through the office. A visit offers families a practical next step when considering the nursery and discussing their child’s needs.
