Two three-hour sessions give this nursery day a clear shape, with Breakfast Club before the morning session and Phoenix Club after the afternoon. Hereford Cathedral School’s nursery welcomes children from age three and sits alongside the Junior School at 28 Castle Street, Hereford. For families weighing a shorter session against a longer day, that distinction between nursery time and additional care matters.
The school places exploration and interactive experiences at the centre of its nursery approach. Its stated values are integrity, kindness and courage: a shared vocabulary for the youngest children’s place within the wider school.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Between them is an hour of lunchtime provision, with staffing and supervision charged separately. This creates two distinct learning blocks rather than one undivided day, so families can consider the session pattern alongside lunchtime and wraparound care.
Learning involves activities shared with other children, group experiences and play. The nursery aims to use these to develop communication, empathy and cooperation, giving children opportunities to practise expressing themselves and taking part together. In March 2025, curriculum planning linked Nursery with later school years, including mathematics taught from age three. That places early learning within a longer educational sequence.
Settling centres on relationships between families and staff, alongside getting to know routines and other children. The nursery’s approach is to learn children’s interests and recognise what they find difficult, then offer encouragement suited to the individual. For a child starting nursery, familiar activities and adults are the practical building blocks of that approach.
An on-site School Nurse advises trained practitioners on children’s health needs. Leadership includes a Head of Pre-Prep & Nursery with a Bachelor of Education degree, an early-years specialism and more than twenty-five years’ experience in primary education. These are concrete elements of the team supporting the nursery day.
Lunch is an optional charged extra. Its charge is separate from the staffing and supervision element of lunchtime provision, a useful distinction when planning attendance across both sessions.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application, following the normal application route and deadline for that entry.
Preparation for the move is a different matter. Nursery children become familiar with school classrooms, facilities and teachers before their next stage. That familiarity can help make the change feel less unfamiliar, but it should be considered separately from admission.
Breakfast Club runs from 7.45am to 8.30am, while Phoenix Club covers 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Morning and afternoon sessions each have an EEF option; lunchtime supervision and wraparound care are charged separately. Ask the Admissions team for current charges or a personalised funding quotation.
Families can book weekday nursery visits by appointment during term time. For enquiries, contact Admissions on 01432 363 583 or email admissions@herefordcs.com. A visit gives parents a practical opportunity to consider how the session timetable fits family life.
