Colour, texture and family stories give the early years curriculum at Kingstone and Thruxton Primary School its practical starting points. Nursery provision begins at age three, within the primary school in Kingstone, Hereford. The emphasis is on experiences children can explore and talk about, from handling art materials to thinking about their own past.
The school aims to develop independence and encourage children to make choices. Its expectations of readiness, respect and safety give that ambition a clear behavioural framework: learning to choose also means learning how those choices affect others.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning into practical activities. Art combines children's own choices with tasks guided by adults. Children investigate how materials feel and move, experiment with colour and practise using simple tools. Choosing materials and changing their work gives them opportunities to express an idea, then try another way of making it.
History begins close to home. Children explore their own lives and those of their families, encounter simple timelines and use role play to investigate questions about the past. Geography starts with themselves, their school and the surrounding area. These familiar subjects give children something concrete to discuss before their understanding extends further.
Jigsaw covers personal, social and emotional learning from ages three to eleven. Each year group has a weekly lesson, adapted to its developmental stage. Themes include Healthy Me and Celebrating Differences, linking learning about feelings and relationships with understanding themselves and other people.
Outdoor learning has a physical base in the school grounds: a Forest School area. The approach uses practical experiences in a natural setting and includes supported risk-taking. A practitioner has completed a Level Three Forest School course, bringing a specific qualification to this school-wide provision.
At the December 2022 inspection, early years activities used a Christmas theme to teach shape names, and mathematical vocabulary included subitising. That example connects a familiar seasonal activity with precise mathematical language.
Parents with concerns about additional needs are directed first to their child's class teacher. The school's support arrangements include Provision Mapping to track extra help and Personal Provision Plans for more complex needs. Support can take place in class or in a small group, with teachers or teaching assistants delivering interventions.
Parent Review days and additional meetings provide opportunities to discuss that help. Progress is considered at the end of each term, so the next steps can be decided with the class teacher and SENDCo. For families, this creates a defined route from raising a concern to discussing support and reviewing it.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes: families must apply again through the normal Reception route by the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as two distinct decisions.
The school office handles enquiries and visit bookings. Contact 01981 250338 or ktpsadmin@kingstoneacademy.co.uk. School visits are welcomed, giving families a direct way to discuss the nursery before making their choice.
